In December 2018, Microsoft announced that they’ll move the Windows 10‘s default and built-in web browser Microsoft Edge to Chromium project. The current version of Microsoft Edge browser which comes preinstalled with Windows 10 is based on its own EdgeHTML and Chakra web rendering engines.

Microsoft announced that the company will adopt Chromium open source project for the development of Microsoft Edge browser which means Microsoft Edge rendering engine will be switched to popular Blink engine. Chromium is an open-source version of popular Google Chrome web browser and its rendering engine called Blink powers many famous browsers such as Google Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi.

Microsoft also announced that Chromium-based Microsoft Edge will be released for Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 operating systems and the company has also plans to release it for Linux and MacOS as well.
