Free Microsoft Office for iPhone, iPad and Android Tablets

Microsoft Office is one of those popular and widely used software which are installed in almost all Windows computers. I have seen many people and computer dealers who install Microsoft Office suite immediately after installing a fresh Windows in computers.

Although Microsoft Office is not free for Windows operating system but now at least its free for mobile phones and tablets. Yes, you heard it right.

Microsoft has just announced that Microsoft Office is absolutely free for popular mobile platforms such as iPhone, iPad and Google Android. In past, you had to purchase Office 365 subscription to use Office apps but now its no longer needed.

Office was already available for iPads but it was not free. Now Microsoft has released a new updated version of Office suite for iPad which is absolutely free now. It comes in form of 3 separate apps: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Similar to iPad, Microsoft has released all 3 Office apps (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) free for iPhone users.

Google Android users will have to wait for sometime. Microsoft has announced that they’ll release free Office apps for Google Android tablets very soon via Google Play Store. In the meantime, you can sign up for the free Preview version for Android to get quick access to Office apps. The GA (General Availability) is expected in early 2015.

  1. yes it’s free! thank you Microsoft…
    I’ve download it from Google Play Store, for a month ago in my Android KitKat phone

  2. ^^ Only time will tell. We’ll need to wait for the preview release.

    @CoOL KinG
    May be they make it free and open source for Windows in future? Who knows?

  3. So if it is free, why does Excel and Word tell me I need a subscription to use it in my new Samsung Tab A tablet? Reading here sounds itbis free, but it wants me to subscribe!!

  4. Thank you very much. Your information isn’t useful because majority of us know that the office mobile apps are free to download. but once downloaded we can not edit documents, activation of this feature requires payment.

  5. It does not work for samsung tablet s6. I suspect that any tablet over 8″ requires monthly subscription. If you try to use the free version it will say “Read Only”. But on cell phones there is no such limitation

  6. I installed the app on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 and its not free, it still wants me to activate a Microsoft account and pay for it

  7. On the Samsung Galaxy S6 Lite Microsoft will not work without a subscription which is BS if you ask me if you’re saying it’s free on all tablets and phones that are Android why is this not! Purposely bought this tablet for using Microsoft and doing photo editing… needless to say I’m very displeased and I will NOT be purchasing a subscription from Microsoft… especially when it’s advertised as free and working on all Android devices!! 😡

  8. I used to have a tab S3 and enjoyed free Office software. But that is gone with my newly bought S6. Searched the Internet and found that:

    So long as you have a Microsoft account and a tablet with a display that’s between 7 and 10.1-inch in size, you can download and use the free (basic) versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint to your heart’s content. Owners of larger devices will have to cough up for an Office 365 subscription.

    What a catch!
