Bug Fix: More Menu Opens Upwards in Windows 11 File Explorer

In this article, we are going to address a very annoying and strange bug present in Windows 11 File Explorer. This bug is related to the 3-dots menu present on the File Explorer toolbar.

The bug started appearing in the recently released Windows 11 2024 Update, version 24H2. The bug appears when the user tries to access or open the 3-dots more menu present at the end of the File Explorer toolbar.

When the user clicks on the 3-dots or “See More” menu icon on the toolbar in File Explorer, the menu opens upwards and causes a menu cut-off issue as shown in following screenshot:

As you can see in the above screenshot, the more menu is not showing properly on the screen, and almost all options are being cut off.

Steps to Reproduce Menu Cut-Off Bug in Windows 11 File Explorer

You can easily reproduce the bug using following steps in your Windows 11 device:

STEP 1: Open File Explorer in Windows 11 24H2.

STEP 2: Click on the 3-dots icon present on the toolbar.

STEP 3: The more menu will launch upwards and you’ll not be able to see the full menu.

If you encounter this super bug in your Windows 11 device, you can fix or temporary resolve it using following methods:

SOLUTION 1: Use Arrow Keys to Select Menu Options

When the menu appears upwards, you can press the Up Arrow key on the keyboard and it’ll select the options that are not currently showing on your computer screen. A tool-tip is shown on the screen, which will help you understand which option is currently selected or highlighted by the arrow key.

Once you select the desired option using arrow key, press Enter key and the File Explorer will apply the option just like you clicked on the option using the mouse cursor.

SOLUTION 2: Restore and Move Down File Explorer Window to See Full Menu

Click on the restore button present on the right-side of the title bar and it’ll unmaximize the File Explorer window. Now move the window downwards to create some free space between the window and top area of your computer screen.

Now click on the 3-dots menu and although it’ll open upwards, you’ll be able to see all options as shown in following screenshot:

  1. Another solution, uninstall these 2 updates KB5044030 and KB5044284 and restart, you will no longer see this error. Same issue I was facing, but after some investigation, I found that these 2 updates generate this bug, but I exactly don’t know how many bugs in these updates, I uninstalled and this bug is gone, this trick worked for me. I hope you will verify.

  2. Hi I have a Lenovo computer and this is the issue that I’m having with my file explorer. How can you restore and move down until you see the full menu?

Let me know soon please and thank you.

    From, Elliott

  3. ^^ Click on the “Restore” icon present between minimize and close buttons in the titlebar and then drag-n-drop the window on your computer screen so that when you click on 3-dots more menu, it gets enough space to show the full menu upwards.
