Internet Explorer users are already aware of "SmartScreen" filter which contains a list of known malicious links and compares the user visited links with the list. If a match is found, it warns the user.
Now Microsoft is going to include this "SmartScreen" mechanism in Windows 8. According to our friend "Long Zheng", In Windows 8, SmartScreen appears to serve two purposes – to reactively check the file system and proactively prevent any downloaded applications from running that are unknown to the filter.
This new mechanism can be enabled/disabled using Folder Options window.

What do you think about this new add-on?

Thats a really good news

Hopefully MS won't make the same mistake they made with UAC.
I'm interested how this will actually improve security, most antivirus software can detect malicious software (as well as windows defender) unless they intend to merge all the features of an antivirus package into the OS - now that would be good :)

It's just another way of MS prevent you from installing certain applications on your computer.
Your freedom of choice would be seriously affected and you'd be tied to applications "approved" by MS.
I don't think it will replace a good antivirus, it's more a kind of slavery and it smells really bad.

This seems like a good idea for users who don't know what the f*ck their doing and download everything they see >_>
But useless for power users.
