^^ If you disable Windows Search service, it turns it off. You can also uninstall it using Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off.

Thanks for the tips. I just wonder why when i have disabled windows search, it reverts to its previous settings as if i have changed nothing!

very frustrating as the searchprotocol.exe and the other associated files are clogging up some cpu load and i want to eliminate this from the possible causes of too high cpu load while using a crucial program.

Is it possible to have search turned off permanently?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

^^ Either you have disabled a service related to your mouse utility or you disabled its entry from startup using msconfig. Open msconfig and look for an entry which is related to your mouse utility and if you find any, enable it.

Thanks for your reply.
I think that all i've done is follow your tips and it seems to have reset the state of the mouse scroll uitility after every boot up.

I didn't change anything apart from your suggestions and now i can't work out how to revert to the previous state. any further suggestions as to which functions i should try and reconfigure?

^^ You'll need to look for a service name related to your mouse utility.

Disabling or setting services to manual in Windows 7 makes no difference to start-up time or the speed of the operating system. I have fully tweaked all the services in all versions of windows, and Windows 7 is the only one which is not affected. So on my new install recently I have left all the services alone, apart from Superfetch which I disabled because I have Windows 7 installed on a SSD (this doesn't seem to make any difference either).

The only benefit is that it will save a few MB of memory for each service, but most people have plenty of memory. Saying that, I noticed my memory usage in Task Manager actually increased after disabling services in Windows 7!

I think Windows 7 services have been tweaked as far they can by Microsoft. They had to get it right after the shambles with Vista!

I still do all the other well-known tweaks to speed up Windows, but I leave the services alone as experience has shown that Windows 7 does not improve whatever you do to them!
