Windows 7 sensibly has many non essential services preset to Manual. Microsoft is clearly taking note of the XP/Vista tweaks people have come up with.

I also always disable (or manual) DNS Client service. If you're not on a corporate network or using your own DNS server, you can turn off this service. This service caches DNS queries but in reality you will not notice. I use a hosts file to block many ad serving domains and the DNS Client service never was one to work well with large hosts files.

Has anyone noticed the Windows 7 services have a nasty habit of the the start-up type reverting back. Vista was bad enough with the read-only services, now MS is saddling users with stealth reverting services? I really wish software devs would remember their software is running on the users hardware.

Windows 7 is not like WinXP where you had to disable to services... here disabling a service means losing a feature (like all the network goodness introduced in win7) and doesn't even give you a speed boost due to the highly optimized architecture behind services..

just use win7 as it comes.. it's blazing fast and with lots of useful features ;)

For some reason turning off TCP/IP Netbios Helper service messes up my network i.e., I can connect to the internet but not to other comps; this is peculiar since none of the other machines (XP Pros) use NetBIOS.

Just make sure when you tweak various services, things still work the way they should.

^^ Open regdit and goto:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

Under this key, look for a key related to MySQL, when you find the key, delete it. Take a backup of the key before deleting it.
