In Windows Vista, you can't use any image as folder background. But there is a small utility which allows you to set any wallpaper as background image in folders.
Thanks to Andreas for creating "Vista Folder Background". It integrates itself in Explorer and adds a new tab "Folder Background" in Folder Customization dialog box.

can anyone help me out. i have installed the "Vista folder background" and it was working great for a while, but when i started changing backgrounds or remove the backround image of one folder , the backround image do get changed/removed ,but when you use the "back botton" to go to a previous folder w/ backgound image, and return to the folder with removed background, the image from the folder with background sorts of overlaps/lingers on the folder w/o background , specialy when you move your cursor to open a folder, and i cant see or read any of the file names. i have to constantly rightclick "refresh" on the folders to remove the lingering jumbled image. Can anyone kindly help me on this. I really like having background image on my folders, im a bit of a customize freak, so id regret having to go without it and would like to keep using it if i could get it working and it wont be bothersome to fix. can anyone please help me on this please, thanks.

This happens at times, well many times actually, its more related to ur system performance.
What i do is put a background which is more in white......so the text within the folder is always visible.....and slowly after a few seconds the background image pops up even if it isint being displayed in the folder.
I wouldnt advice you to change the settings to System Performance
(in My Computer Advanced Settings) as.....this case happens in a few folders not all.

^^ Open Command Prompt and go to the parent folder containing the folder which is giving problem to you.
for example, if you changed background of a folder "test" which is stored in "D:\folder\", then provide following commands:
That's it. It'll delete the file and you'll be able to open the folder without any problem.
