UPDATE: Now With 147 Transitions and 76 effects

The new Windows Live pack includes "Movie Maker Beta" version which provides the new ribbon interface but many advanced users are not happy with this new version. Lots of essential features like timelines, adding text on videos, audio edits, etc have been removed from this new version to make the application simple and easy to use.

But Microsoft allows you to download the good ol' Movie Maker 2.6 for Windows Vista which also works in Windows 7.

But its still a stripped down version. Features removed from original movie maker include the video capturing ability from devices like a dv camera etc.

So what to do now? Simple, "Devrexster" @ WinMatrix has created a portable version of "Movie Maker 2.6" which works in Windows XP, Vista and all Windows 7 builds. Since its a portable version, you don't need to install it.

You can download the portable version using following link:

It'll download a ZIP file, extract it and run the "Runonce.exe" file as Administrator. That's it. Now you can run the Movie Maker by double-clicking on "moviemk.exe" file.

  • Great! But sometimes when I add fade in and out effects, it won't save.. I have to remove the effects AND the audio and change it to some other format just for it to save.
