"TransTaskbar" is a portable, small and free application which can make Windows Taskbar and Startmenu transparent. It might become useful if you are using Windows XP and want to get some transparency for eye candy effects or if you are using Windows Vista or 7 but can't enjoy Aero interface because your Graphics card is not capable to run it.
It can be used in Windows XP, Vista and 7 and works very well without any problem.

The utility has been created by our friend "Solo-Dev" @ DA. You can download it using following link:
Extract the downloaded ZIP file and you'll get 2 files in it: TTB.exe and TTB-UI.exe
You'll need "TTB-UI.exe" file mostly. Run it and drag the slider to your desired value and click on "Apply" button. It'll immediately make the Taskbar and Startmenu transparent.
TTB-UI.exe is a GUI application and it doesn't allow to set the transparency below 25 and here comes the turn of TTB.exe which a command-line version of this application.
You can open a Command Prompt window and use TTB.exe in following format:
TTB transparency_value
For example, if you want to set transparency to 10, use following command:
TTB 10
Its a good utility for eye candy lovers.

^^ It doesnt show any custom Start button. It only put transparency to startmenu and Taskbar. It seems you are using any other 3rd party app which is causing the issue. Please check in System Tray and Task Manager and close any such app.

Totally messed up my theme :(
Start menu turned black, wallpaper was gone (black desktop background) and the transparency of the taskbar didn't work at all. The taskbar- and window dragging transparency included in the utility-software provided with my videocard (Nvidia GeFore FX 5200) works a lot better and doesn't conflict at all. To avoid compatibility troubles I've disabled these Nvidia functions in advance, for you'll never know what happens if you use 2 transparency tools at the same time...
Could you please a little more careful before recommending us poor-quality utilities full of bugs? I'm not the only one complaining right now... :|

it even makes icons transparent. I think the only way to get good transparent effect in xp is windowblind.

This is crap...
A custom build of Taskbar Eliminator is far better:)
