I always used third party firewall ‘Eset Smart Security’. never trusted Microsoft inbuilt firewall.
Really need to add info in this article about the programs available to improve Windows Firewall such as TinyWall or Windows Firewall Notifier both of which make it a more serious firewall.
Great info, as usual, but you did not mention the fact that Windows 7 or 8 firewall can be run alongside any of the mentioned third-party apps. In fact, it is recommended that you keep Windows Firewall active even if you install internet security suites, like Norton, Kaspersky, McAfee, etc.
I do just that on four different systems running Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit) and have had no problems.

WOW VG, you got it right this time, I completely agree with the order of this list. If the Windows firewall had better functionality instead of having to use additional software, it would easily be further up in my opinion. That’s what hurts it. But it does the job!
Windows Firewall is ok. May be a little tricky to set, but can be used without any third party sofware if you don’t mind to work a little.
Hey VG, you’ve just posted about top 5 antivirus and firewall. Now, how about McAfee Site Advisor, Web of Trust, and some similar security apps for online browsing protection? Can you please write an article about these, because these are also free, and necessary too…

^^ Windows 7 firewall is more customizable compared to Windows Vista firewall. Please check out Windows Vista firewall and you’ll understand what I mean. 🙂
I think comodo is best firewall for windows 7 & 8, I’m using it from a year. I tested Zonealarm but i hate the old look interface. So From my point Comodo is best.
The best free firewall is Private Firewall….simply the best and the lightest.
I purchased Zone alarm Pro antivirus and firewall. I was immediately hit with a “browser is locked” virus. Tried help on Zone alarm – Nothing useable. Restarted in safe mode and wandered around – found the problem in my startup file – deleted it – system crashed but restarted ok. Decided I’d better upgrade to ZA Extreme Security. DID. Ran deep scan (1.5 hours) and found ZA found no problems. Today has been nothing but phishing pop-ups, redirections, and crashes!!!!! Tried to ‘Chat’ with ZA ( no live people are available). Gave me a string of links for downloads. Tried the first (couldnt print out the list for reference) and it ran (with no result) but closed the chat session. BOOM!
Called the cancellation line to try to get some help by phone – NONE IS AVAILABLE – so I just cancelled the whole shebang and asked for a refund.
And, ZoneAlarm is so widely advertised and suggested as the very best out there. I don’t get it at all.
VG! did you hear the news about Comodo?
Comodo is now shipping adware called “Privdog” that breaks HTTPS security.
It will turn your Browser into one that just accepts every HTTPS certificate out there, whether it’s been signed by a certificate authority or not.
Please remove Comodo from the list until they remove the adware.

I wanna try ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, so I have to disable Windows Firewall Service in services.msc?
and another question I’m using Kaspersky Total Security should I disable Windows Defender? I’m using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
^^ Most of the antivirus programs automatically disable Windows Defender so you don’t need to worry about it.
