[Tip] Disable New Material Design UI of Settings Page in Google Chrome

Today Google released the latest Chrome 59 version to stable channel which comes with many bug fixes, security fixes and improvements. One major change which Google Chrome users will notice is the implementation of Material Design in Settings page.

In previous versions of Chrome web browser, Google team implemented Material Design UI which brought flat icons, tabs and other UI elements and now the same Material Design has been added to the Settings (Preferences) page.

If you launch Settings page in latest Google Chrome version, you’ll get a brand new Settings page as shown in following screenshot:

As you can see in the above screenshot, the layout and look-n-feel of the Settings page has been changed a lot. Now the Settings page uses Material Design UI, sections have been changed and new toggle buttons (on/off sliders) have been added in place of old checkboxes.

In my opinion the new Settings page looks great and organizes preferences a lot better than the old Settings page but if you don’t like the new Material Design UI of Settings page and want to restore the good ol’ classic Settings page in Google Chrome, this tutorial will help you.

Today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to disable the new Material Design UI in Settings (preferences) page and restore classic Settings page in Google Chrome web browser.

So if you also want to bring back the old Settings page in Google Chrome, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now press “Ctrl+F” keys together to launch find box and type md-settings in the find box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Enable Material Design settings (Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS)
If enabled, the chrome://settings/ URL loads the Material Design settings page. #enable-md-settings

3. Select Disabled option from the drop-down box.

  1. Google Chrome 61 was Removed #enable-md-settings, but only Extension can disabled material design.

  2. I did this several weeks ago and all was fine, until last night, I went the the settings manager and the new page with back again. So I went to re-enable the md-settings, and now it is not there any more, it looks like I’m stuck with the new settings manager page unless someone can figure something out, please help me/us get back the old settings manager page.

  3. can’t get that ” Enable Material Design settings (Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS)” so can’t disable it. Thanks anyway.

  4. I’m having the same problem as those above me, as of last night material design is no longer an option, but the only option. I would like to switch back, but the disable option is no longer available and the specific website I’d like to reset has also removed the option to disable material design. If anyone knows, why do these companies want people to use this design so much?
