UPDATE: "RealWorld Paint" was released in 2008 with the name "Paint.COM" and we were the first one to post about it. Now the software has been renamed to "RealWorld Paint" and a new version 2011.1 has been released.
RealWorld Paint is an excellent image editor developed by our friend "Vlasta Miler" which is light on resources and absolutely free to download. It can be used as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop.
RealWorld Paint can display images using any zoom factor and always shows 100% accurate preview of the drawn shape. Tooltips are displayed throughout the user interface to explain meaning of controls.
It can work with layers and assign effects to every layer. A layer can have for example a bevel effect active giving all shapes a 3D look and feel.
It has much hidden power under the hood and harbors features unexpected in a freeware image editor. Many of its drawing tools and image filters are able to do gamma-aware blending and color gradient interpolation, producing correct colors by default.
A powerful scripting system allows users to greatly extend and customize the functionality of this program using JavaScript. For example the "Create screenshot" command (used to generate the screenshot above) is a scripted function.
Beside the ability to use native plug-ins for virtually everything (filters, tool, fills, windows, codecs, storage), RealWorld Paint is also able to use the vast amount of plug-ins compatible with Adobe Photoshop.

It supports many of the things you may miss in Paint.NET like:
- layers with assigned effects
- gamma-aware blending
- sub-pixel accuracy
- smooth zoom-in
- compatibility with Photoshop plug-ins
- and much more
Now a new version 2011.1 has been released. This new version includes many significant changes and updates. The tool can now edit animations and it can export and import Photoshop, GIMP and Paint.net files. There are new tools and filters from RealWorld Photos.
Change list:
- Animation editor with layers and zero-config GIF optimizer.
- Photo-related tools (red eye remover, clone tool, crop tool) from RW Photos.
- Command line interface for drawing tools.
- Image brush.
- Redesigned Online page with news and downloadable media.
- Automated updates.
- Many new photo-related image filters from RW Photos.
- Redesigned codec subsystem. Can import and export layered images in .psd, .xcf, and .pdn formats. Some layer styles from Photoshop files are imported and converted to RealWorld styles.
- Improved layer styles editor.
Its an excellent image editor. You can download it using following link:

First Paint.NET and now Paint.COM! Wonder when we'll be seeing a Paint.ORG or Paint.ME...
Anyway, this program does look VERY promising and has a pretty good interface as well. That being said, I'm probably going to stick with Paint.NET anyway as it does everything I need it to do, and I'm pretty much used to the interface. :)

@Nikolaj : Paint.Net has nothing to do with Paint.COM. Each of them is a different entity, just to answer your question that you asked.Hope this was helpful to you?
I do not know about Paint.COM but I use Paint.Net and as Ashutosh Mishra said it does everything you need it to do. Also, is a much smaller download and very easy to learn.
I am not counting out Paint.COM as Ashutosh also said it looks promising. You know what they say if it is not broken do not fix it.Thanks for posting VG as who knows I may try it out just to make a comparison to the Paint.Net program. It may have more to offer such as, the ability to use PhotoShop plugins to name one.

Paint.COM program has way more to offer than any other free application that I know of.
This is the reason for the download size. I am quite intrigued to find that the interface is very easy to understand. It has tool tips galore,so you would not be pulling your hair out not knowing what to do.This is going to go somewhere and would be one to watch.I might be going out on a limb by saying, this program is the closest I have seen to PhotoShop. The biggest thing being that it is free but for how long. Thanks VG for the excellent review as without you I probably would have passed it by.In my honest opinion all should get this keeper. If you can not afford PhotoShop as myself you will not be sorry for this one. Thanks again VG. Cheers mate.
