Microsoft is planning to release an update to Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) notifications in Windows XP. The worldwide roll-out will begin this week and will continue over the next few months.

Reason behind this Update:

Microsoft's aim behind this update is to simplify the installation process to make it easy for customers to stay up-to-date and to increase the effectiveness of these notifications. It'll also help to align experiences across Windows XP and Windows Vista.

What will this Update do?

First important thing, this update will only affect Windows XP Professional systems. It'll reconfigure the notifications experience to mirror notifications in Windows Vista SP1.

Customers who are using non-genuine Windows can expect a black desktop to appear every 60 minutes of use. Also a persistent desktop notification will appear in the lower right corner indicating that the user may be a victim of software counterfeiting.

Customers will also have a simple EULA to accept instead of an installation wizard for new notifications installations in Windows XP Pro. This EULA has been modified to allow the anti-piracy validation control to auto-update itself for future releases. It'll minimize the number of interactions customers with genuine software will have with the tool, ultimately improving the user experience.

What should customers do?

For customers using non-genuine software, it’s important to note that Microsoft has a flexible option to convert to a genuine version. I recommend you to visit www.microsoft.com/genuine to learn more.
