Internet Explorer 11 will come with many new features such as improved performance and security, faster page loading, support for new web standards, WebGL support, etc. But did you know there are a few features which have been removed from IE11?

Today in this topic, we'll try to list all features which have been removed from IE11 as well as features that have been added to IE11. So without wasting time lets share the features list:

1. Enable Tabbed Browsing

This option was present under "Internet Options -> General-> Tabs". In previous IE versions, users were allowed to enable or disable tabbed browsing functionality by checking or unchecking "Enable tabbed browsing" option. But this option has been removed from IE11.

2. Automatically recover from page layout errors with Compatibility View

This option was present under "Internet Options -> Advanced -> Browsing" section. It was used to enable "Compatibility View" in Internet Explorer to view incompatible websites properly. Some older websites do not support new web standards and look different in new web browser versions. That's why compatibility view was introduced in Internet Explorer so that it can open those incompatible websites properly as if they were opened using older versions of IE. IE11 doesn't come with this option.

3. Enable websites to use the search pane

This option was also present under "Internet Options -> Advanced -> Browsing" section. This option was used to allow websites to show their content in old search pane which was present in older versions of IE. This option has been removed from IE11.

4. Load sites and content in the background to optimize performance

Its a new option which has been added to IE11. This option helps in improving page loading speed by prefetching website content in background.

You can read more about it at following link:

5. Reuse windows for launching shortcuts (when tabbed browsing is off)

This option was also present under "Internet Options -> Advanced -> Browsing" section. Since Microsoft has removed option to enable or disable tabbed browsing in IE11, this option doesn't make sense.

6. Use SPDY/3

Its another new option added in IE11. This option allows users to enable or disable the use of SPDY/3 protocol in IE11. SPDY/3 is a network protocol which optimizes network requests latency by compressing, prioritizing and multiplexing them. This option can be found under "Internet Options -> Advanced -> HTTP settings" section.

7. Enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode

Another new and interesting option introduced in IE11. This option allows users to enable or disable 64-bit process for Internet Explorer while running in enhanced protected mode.

This option comes disabled by default but you can enable it using "Internet Options -> Advanced -> Security" section.

If you want greater security, enable this option but if you want greater compatibility, keep the option disabled.

8. Hidden Secret Enterprise Mode

IE11 comes with a secret Enterprise Mode feature to provide better compatibility for older websites. Its not enabled by default but you can activate it using Group Policy Editor or Registry Editor.

  • Thanks for the review VG. New features are nice but I'll miss compatibility view feature.

  • I Think There is Only ""Few"" New Features in IE 11 :( & They Should Name it IE 10.11

  • Seems as if they've taken away more than what they've given. And that option to enable something that doesn't exist any more, it's incredible with all the resources this huge company has that not one of their experts noticed it. It took some guy in India to point it out to them.

  • frank f.: It's the Microsoft Way: dumb things down, take away choices, and stubbornly insist that what YOU want is irrelevant because what THEY think you want is right. That attitude is what resulted in such "progress" as the ribbon and the entire Windows 8 UI.

  • Gotta stick with IE10 itself...

  • This is out of topic question but is it possible to use IE's ABP+ in Maxthon too? Maxthon is IE based browser though.

If it's not possible can you recommend one for Maxthon.

  • VG

^^ Dont know but you can check Maxthon extensions:

  • In IE10(the start screen app) the tabs would be positioned at the top but in IE 11 the tabs are positioned at the bottom just above the url address bar.

  • Now in IE 11 there is also a switch to reading view available. This is possible in the IE app opened from start menu, also not all pages have reading view.Like this page:
has reading view available. But not all have them. To access the reading view open the webpage and in the url address bar to the right u will notice a book like symbol that is the button for reading view, try it it gives a Word-like experience.

  • WHY do they keep insisting on shoving TABS down our throats. They are a pain in the azimuth for me to use them. I much rather have seperate windows for each thing I am doing. That's why I am still using IE 9 and FF 22.0-it took a LOT of work to get back to those 2 browsers, but at least I am happy.

  • I describe my problem here at microsoft site so if anyone know how to solve this problem, can see a pics of problem too. Didn't know how to ask here.

  • VG

^^ It might be some bug. You can try the Reset or Refresh PC options.

  • I tried all options...reinstalled win 8.1, refreshing, reinstall IE but nothing changed. Simply cann't understand .

  • Hello

The two following options are not available in IE11 on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 :

    A) "SPDY/3" option under "Internet Options -> Advanced -> HTTP settings" section.

    B) "Enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode" under "Internet Options -> Advanced -> Security" section.

  • Hi Vishal,

When you press CTL and D to add a bookmark, the folders don't expand and collapse anymore, they are all expanded. Except, the IE 11 bookmarks SIDE PANEL will still collapse and expand folders. In the past, both of these worked that way.

I was wondering, if you have on your site a tweak for IE 11 to fix the bookmark drop-down list like it used to be in IE 6 when you use CTL and D. I don't know who started it and who copied who, but it seems to be an annoying thing now, except in FIREFOX and Opera, that I think of..

I know it can be possible to fix this, as other browsers that use the IE engine still work like the old IE in the past when it comes to using CLT and D.
Thanks for any input . I appreciated it..

  • VG

^^ Its by design and nothing can be done to change it.
