How to Restore Missing “Compressed (zipped) Folder” Item in Send To Menu in Windows?

Here is another frequently occurring problem regarding to “Send To” menu.

As we all know about “Send To” menu which appears when we right-click on a file or folder in Windows Explorer. It contains some useful items including “Compressed (zipped) Folder” which can create a ZIP file of the selected files/folders within a few seconds without using any 3rd party compression utility. Its really a useful option.

But sometimes this item gets deleted from “Send To” menu accidentally or intentionally. Following tutorial will help you in restoring this useful item back in “Send To” menu:

METHOD A:

This method will only work in Windows XP. It’ll not work in Windows Vista and later:

1. Type following command in RUN dialog box:

rundll32 zipfldr.dll,RegisterSendto

2. It’ll re-create the missing “Compressed (zipped) Folder” option in “Send To” menu.

METHOD B:

This is the simplest method and will work in all Windows versions.

Just download following zip file, extract it and copy the extracted file to “Send To” folder:

To open “Send To” folder, type “shell:sendto” in RUN dialog box and press Enter.

  1. Method A worked for me but after I put “rundll32 zipfldr.dll,RegisterSendto” into run I had to enter “sendto” into run and move the now created “Compressed (zipped) Folder” somewhere else and create a shortcut and place that into “sendto” instead… If I didn’t the “Compressed (zippped Folder”
would disappear out of the “Send to” menu.

  2. i am missing my zip folder password.
    i have important document there.
now how i can recovery this file.

    help me please

  3. The title is “How to Restore Missing “Compressed (zipped) Folder” Item in Send To Menu in Windows XP, Vista and 7”, yet the main “tip” doesn’t work with Vista and/or 7. Annoying and misleading.

  4. I may be missing something, but what is the ‘send to’ folder? i need step by step instructions!!

  5. I am using windows 8 and have no idea what is going on most of the time. it is my work computer so i have no choice.

  6. ok, as computer illiterate as i am i worked it out. my user profile did not contain the send to folder at all. i when to the corresponding folder in the ‘default’ user profile, copied it , pasted it into my User profile, restarted the computer and now it works.

the folder i had to create was is C:\Users\your name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

change yourname to your user profile name, and you need hidden folders to be shown to see AppData, it will be greyed out but you can still click on it (hopefully). so that’s my 2 cents

  7. My problem not solved. In “SendTo” folder i reCreate file using method A. But still not getting “Compressed (zipped) Folder” in SendTo option in pop-up menu.

  8. Hi Vishal 🙂

under XP, the SendTo folder might be…
    C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\SendTo

    under newer OS’s…
    C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

  9. Thank you for the help .. It was very useful..

  10. Had this issue multiple times on Windows 8. The instructions from RR did the trick! No SendTo folder existed in my profile so copied it from the Public profile. Rebooted computer, problem solved!

  11. Tried the instructions from RR, but was unable to find the SendTo folder in the Public Profile.

  12. I finally figured this out. What a unnecessary hassle Windows 8 has given us.

How to get the send to zip option back.

    1. Get to your main desktop

    2. Hold the Windows symbol on your keyboard and press “R” (this brings up the run command)

    3. copy and paste this in the run command. %systemdrive%\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

    4. Copy the compressed (zip folder)

    5. Hold the Windows symbol on your keyboard and press “R” (this brings up the run command)

    6. type in the run box—> shell:sendto

    7. Paste the compressed (zip folder) you copied

    8. NOW IT WORKS !!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Thank you

  13. Thanks Jeremy.
Your method works, although in my case I have to do it again every time I restart my PC. Thanks

  14. Thank you so much for telling me about method 2. It worked. I was hesitant to try because I thought the file was another “fix it for me”. I like to fix it myself. As I opened the file, it is a default [compressed zip folder] target file. That was just what I needed and it helped me to use the functionality. I really didn’t want to rebuild my whole profile.

    Thanks again, Terry

  15. You sir deserve a bells!

Windows 7 – Method A did not work at all as I suspect when i used CC Cleaner once upon a time i deleted many .dll’s after contracting a trojan.
However Method B worked like a charm – just drag all the files on that folder, simple! Thank you very much 🙂

  16. i recently compressed some of my documents and after the compression process was done, i just can’t get the location of the compressed document yet my disk size tells mi that there is a file not being visible(i added all the sizes of documents that are visible and the total does not quite match the balance of empty disk space)

  17. i recently compressed some of my documents and after the compression process was done, i just can’t get the location of the compressed document yet my disk size tells mi that there is a file not being visible(i added all the sizes of documents that are visible and the total does not quite match the balance of empty disk space) pliz help mi get back my file…

  18. METHOD C confirmed in win7,

    1. create blank text file any name, eg. ‘Compressed (zipped) folder’
    2. change extension to ‘.zfsendtotarget’

that’s it. default link also contains the string ‘Zip’, but this is not needed for the shell to recognise it, can just be a 0 byte file.

  19. No problem with zip folder functionality.
Don’t know where else to ask this question.

XP has option to add a password to zip folders.
This option appears to be removed from modern Win.

Any trick to replace W7 zipfldr.dll with XP zipfldr.dll?
    Then, start/run: regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll?

Would it work to replace on reboot?
How can we get this XP functionality back?
