It seems that there is a big problem in taking ownership of the old files in order to rename them. Actually, this is not necessary in order to install the better^H^H^H^H^H^H XP versions of WordPad files.

An easier method is to install an older version of WordPad (or Paint) in a different location on disk (such as" C:\Program Files (x86)\WordPad" ) and place new shortcuts on your desktop.

You could also edit the existing shortcuts to point to the new files.

Doing this does not require taking ownership of the previous versions, renaming them, and installing the replacements in the same location.

Found an easier fix, you can rename the exe and mui files for the vista apps (I did wordvista.exe and wordvista.exe.mui) and put them beside the win 7 files, then a link on the desktop to them and it works fine, I also renamed and dropped mspaint intot the accessories folder and it's mui in the en-us along with wordpad and it works too.

Fantastic! Works a treat and is well worth having to take ownership of the files if you consider that you get to use the older and far better version of Wordpad. If you are having trouble with taking ownership of the files follow this guide but rename the files inspead of deleting them.

I absolutely detest the ribbon interface, installing 7 and seeing them here by default almost made me nuke the partition, but I decided to looksee for something like this.

These intructions on how to revert to the old style made my day, thanks a lot for posting them :)

I think microsoft should do us all a favor and give us an update that would include a "classic XP" option in the file menu and/ or context menu so users could quickly choose whichever look to Wordpad or Paint they prefer. Win7 update would not look any different until the end user would make this choice.
