What? There is no Classic Start menu in Windows 7? That's the most common question which Windows 7 users ask us. Actually Microsoft has completely removed Classic start menu from Windows 7 and you are forced to use the new Vista like start menu.
Although the new start menu is much better than the classic one, lots of people still prefer the Classic one. So what to do? Here is the solution.
"CSMenu" is a small application for Windows 7 which can bring the Classic start menu back in Windows 7. You just need to install it and run the application. There is also a portable version available so you can run it without installing.
Following is a screenshot of CSMenu in action:

You can Pin its shortcut to Taskbar so that you can use it similar to Start button.
You can also hide default Start ORB (Start button) using "Start Killer".
You can give it a try using following link:
NOTE: When we install it, it didn't create its shortcut in Programs menu or Desktop. If you also face this problem, you can run its EXE file from "%programfiles\CSMenu" folder.
PS: At the installation time, make sure to select "Custom Installation" option and uncheck "Install the Ask Toolbar" checkbox.

"The Vista-style interface is less intuitive, less user-friendly and takes longer to do ANYTHING with than the instant-access and time tested fly-out menus. Two clicks and BOOM, there's your program. I don't have to take my hands off the mouse. Seriously, if keyboard navigating and actually *typing out words* is so much better, why don't you go back to DOS 6.22 and Xtree Gold? Nobody, and I mean NOBODY is drinking the Microsoft Kool-Aid anymore, dude. When you carry water for Steve Ballmer you simply look like a fool."
I'm glad you made this comment! I get sick of people who like eye candy and bogus features (bloat) over functionality. I wonder how many of the people making comments in this thread have Windows XP / Windows 7 certifications....I wonder how many have had to remotely support users over the phone. Frankly I think most of the people who like Windows 7 are imbeciles. It does have some good features but plenty of completely messed up ones (such as search), and ones that should have been fixed like dual monitor support.

The new windows 7 GUI is in my opinion a downgrade compared to its classic predecessor. Anyone who uses his pc for work will find this new GUI more suitable to games console users and a definite no no for serious work. I downloaded CLASSIC SHELL and this has alleviated the problem somewhat. Were it not for CLASSIC SHELL then I would have definitely gone back to XP. At present I use XP for my 3d cad work (and all other work) and use win7 with CLASSIC SHELL on this pc for Games and web surfing etc only.
MS has definitely allowed the suits to dictate what should be; And they chose fancy rubbish over function!
Win7 is a Mac look alike and this is someday going to push me to go linux. I tried for over 6 months to learn the Win7 GUI but it is just a waste of time. I have been using PCs since the DOS era and this GUI is possibly the worst most time wasting interface I have ever come across!

Win 7 isn't difficult, just cumbersome. With Classic Start Menu (google it) you get the old appearance back and with many many options to customize features. The Win7 default with a scrollbar is simply idiotic from a user perspective.
