If you are a Windows Vista user and face Explorer freezing problem frequently, then this tutorial might help you.
Windows Vista has built-in support for zip files. It can create, extract, browse through zip files which is a good feature but this good feature can give you troubles if you are dealing with large zip files.
Actually this problem has been faced by lots of Vista users. Vista explorer freezes or starts taking 100% CPU resources while opening a large zip file or opening a folder containing a large zip file.
To fix this problem, you'll have to disable the built-in zip support in Windows Vista:
1. Open regedit and goto following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID
2. Under this key, delete following 2 keys:
{E88DCCE0-B7B3-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}
{0CD7A5C0-9F37-11CE-AE65-08002B2E1262}
3. Restart your system and now your problem should be fixed. You can use freeware like 7-Zip to open, create, extract zip files.

hi VG , THANKS FOR YOUR INVALUABLE EFFORTS .
ACTUALLY MY PROBLEM IS RELATED TO CRASHES BUT NOT EXPLORER,
it is the windows sidebar that crashes ,it crashes as soon as i right click anywhere in the sidebar & even on right clicking the tray icon.
WINDOW SIDEBAR HAS STOPPED WORKING

Thanks a lot VG for showing interest in my problem , i found out my problem solution , actually i was using the application Mmm + from
http://hace-software.com/mmm-plus.shtml
i had purchased this in my windows xp days .the program website mentions that hace is not compliant with Vista ,
i installed the software on vista unknowingly but this software was working perfectly , both the software & Vista never GAVE A WARNING ON COMPATIBILITY ,
HOW CAN MiCROSOFT be so careless that Vista doesn't stop a program from installing which corrupts the functions of the OS ???
now i have uninstalled the software & my sidebar , task manager are running happily again.
CAN you tell me a way/software by which i can hide the unwanted context menu items

VG, I have an interesting (and maybe related) issue. I followed your tutorial for "explorer freezing during large file transfer" and it seemed to work. However, now explorer freezes all the time (every boot-up) after about 1-10 min. nothing running, no program trigers it, it just stops working. THe weird thing is that the mouse is movable the entire time, but no buttons or keystrokes are registered by the system. Hard boot is the only remedy. Something very bad has happened!!! (lol) I followed your directions to undo the DEP disable and that didn't help... in fact, the DEP options are still "grayed-out" in the user settings window where one can usually make adjustments.
Any advice?

Hi, VG, I have a problem. I try to access my dialog box through my programs, and the boxes would freeze every time. It started happening a month or so ago, and I can't seem to find the problem. I can't save anything, or open anything into my programs. Do you have any insight to this issue?
