If you are a Windows XP user, you can see the new XP welcome screen at Windows startup. Also when you click on "Log Off" or "Shutdown" options in Startmenu, it shows new XP Style dialog boxes as shown in following screenshots:

There are also Classic dialog boxes available in Windows XP. If you don't want the new XP Style dialog boxes, you can enable the old Classic dialog boxes as shown in following screenshots:

Following tutorial will help you in enabling/disabling the new XP Style dialog boxes and Welcome Screen:
1. Open User Accounts applet in Control Panel.
2. Click on "Change the way users log on or off" link as shown in following screenshot:
3. It'll show a new page containing 2 options:
- Use the Welcome screen
- Use Fast User Switching
Now if you want to disable new Welcome screen and XP style dialog boxes, then disable both options. Or if you want to enable welcome screen and new XP style dialog boxes, then enable both options.
NOTE 1: If you get following error while enabling "Use the Welcome screen" option:
Uninstall client services for netware.
Open "Network Connections" and open Properties of your Internet Connection. Now go to "Networking" tab and select "Client services on Netware" option and click on the"Uninstall" button.
NOTE 2: You might also get following error message while enabling "Use Fast User Switching" option:
Fast User Switching cannot be used because Offline Files is currently enabled. To make changes to Offline Files, click OK.
If you get this error message, click on OK button and it'll show a new dialog box. Now disable "Enable offline files" option in this dialog box and click on OK button. Now you'll be able to enable "Use Fast User Switching" option.

vg , i have a huge prob.... my welcome screen suddenly appeared in classic version and also the log 0ff thingy, before things turned to be like that , i was trying to change my log on screen but it was a failure... then it turned to be like this,huh.. annoying. anyways i've tried all suggestions u gave, but it didnt work out... pls help me.... ASAP, tq=)

^^ Try to restore original logonui.exe file. Also make sure "Welcome screen" is enabled.

I have windows XP Professional but for about 6 months now I have not been able to use "change the way users log on or off" even after following all the suggestions you have provided so far. When I log off it does give me the option to connect to other user but when I click on that it sends me to my standard log on page and say a that it is locked and it needs a password. The interesting thing is, I do not have a password I judst write in my name to enter and leave the password field blank.
When I go tot he User Account and select "change the way users log on or off" it accepts it. On the other hand if I click on the side menu asking for information on it it opens a blank screen. DOes that mean I might not have it installed.
I use VPN to contact to my office but as far as I know I do not have a Netwrok set up. When I look this is what I see: 1394 Connection and Local Area Connection.

i have checked "use welcome screen" still i didnt got my welcome screen. i checked the registry entry that you have given above and its value was already set to 1..i dont know what is DWORD. i havent got my welcome screen fixed yet,plz help
