@John, you're right about Group Policy Edit but don't forget it's not available in most versions of Windows 7 so the registry tweak is required.

But it was in Firefox I tested on Enterprise and on Ultimate - it uses the legacy one in Ultimate but the new one in Enterprise? Perhaps there is a Firefox setting then :P

^^ Windows 7 dialog box uses navigation pane similar to Explorer. But some old programs still use the old classic dialog box and not the new Windows 7 one.

In fact, the whole common file dialog box is much more like default Explorer. But not entirely, as I removed everything but Favorites and Computer from there in Explorer but that did not affect the common file dialog box. Sorry for double posting - if possible you may reject this second comment but I only wish that you understand me entirely :)

Hello Vishal.
I have been using Enterprise version of Windows 7 and in there, the Places of common file dialog box is much more similar to the Navigation Pane!
The icons are small and in a list like Navigation Pane. I had my Favorites from Explorer (adding "MyFavorites" does not give the same Favorites!). And really it was all great - until I find myself in Ultimate version with this "legacy" Places, is what I would call it.
Perhaps there is a way to get that in Ultimate as in Enterprise?
Certainly I can not be the only one who would prefer that over the current poor Places pane.

Hi,

excellent tutorial, and great advice but John in the second page, about Gpedit.msc.

I would also like to ask how can we enable the Libraries Place. The mentioned directory doens't work (x64 w7). I would also like to add "Network" from default dialog, not "MyNetworkPlaces".

Please respond. :)

%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\libraries doesn't seem to be accepted (no icon appears) and using C:\Users\~Username~\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries doesn't work the same as the "Libraries" of the default. The icon is different. The layout of the contents is different. Some libraries accessed this way seem to be missing locations. Anyone know if there's a "magic" name or number for Libraries?
