We're getting lots of mails regularly asking same question - How can I change Start button text in Windows?
Although we have mentioned it in following tutorial:
List of a few Locations in Windows XP to be Hacked Using Resource Hacker
But many times people miss this article. So today we decided to write a small separate tutorial about it:
Before:

After:

1. Open "%windir%\Explorer.exe" file in Resource Hacker.
2. Go to:
"String Table -> 37 -> 1033 -> 578" (If you are using Luna theme)
"String Table -> 38 -> 1033 -> 595" (If you are using Windows Classic theme)
3. You'll get a string "start". Just change it with whatever text you want to show. Make sure you put quotes.
4. Compile the script and save the file. That's it. You have done.
NOTE 1: To know more about Resource Hacker, visit following link:
All About Resource Hacker in a brief Tutorial
NOTE 2: If you are facing problems while saving a file after editing in resource hacker, then make sure you have disabled WFP (Windows File Protection) service using WFP Patcher.
Also if you are getting error "Can't create file...", that means you have edited and saved the same file in past and there is a backup file which needs to be deleted before saving this file again. Go to the folder containing this file and you'll see a similar file having "_original" in its name. Delete it and try to save the file in resource hacker.

Hi there Vishal
I just want to first thank you for this wonderful website and to all the other people who contributed etc.
I am new to the site but have been looking at some of the hacks on here and many are very useful .
But I want to ask you a question about the patch thats needed for xp, I downloaded it and tried to install it
but I got a error message about compatibility ,
My first question is that because I have xp home edition and SP3 on my system?? and secondly if i take that off will the hacks work.and go back to SP2.
At the moment I have my pc going like a rocket because some of the hacks I incorporated from you guys, but I would like
to do some visual effects also but I am not sure of the best approach .

VG
^^ Then you'll need to edit the Windows theme. Btw did you try to change the font from "Desktop Properties -> Appearance -> Advanced"?

^^ Please read the 2nd point carefully. You'll need to change a separate text for Classic theme.
