How to Change Start Button Text in Windows Using Resource Hacker?

NOTE: If you are facing problems while saving a file after editing in resource hacker, then make sure you have disabled WFP (Windows File Protection) service using WFP Patcher, it can be found in our "Download" section.

Also if you are getting error "Can't create file...", that means you have edited and saved the same file in past and there is a backup file which need to be deleted before saving this file again. Go to the folder containing this file and you'll see a similar file having "_original" in its name. Delete it and try to save the file in resource hacker.

I'm getting lots of mails regularly asking same question - How can I change Start button text in Windows?

Although I have mentioned it in following tutorial:

List of a few Locations in Windows XP to be Hacked Using Resource Hacker

But many times ppl miss this article. So today I decided to write a small separate tutorial about it:

After:

1. Open "%windir%\Explorer.exe" file in Resource Hacker.

2. Go to:

"String Table -> 37 -> 1033 -> 578" (If you are using Luna theme)

"String Table -> 38 -> 1033 -> 595" (If you are using Windows Classic theme)

3. You'll get a string "start". Just change it with whatever text you want to show. Make sure you put quotes.

4. Compile the script and save the file. That's it. You have done.

Hi Vishal
I tried the some tweaks using resource hacker but whatever I do is not getting saved. For example, i tried to change logon screen & bootscreen with bitmaps of my choice, i tried changing "start" button to "prs". Everything is fine but when i click file menu & save, its not getting saved. What is the problem ?

Subsequent to my post i saw this in your tutorial and i downloaded WFP. When I try to install this my a-squared malware detection says that WFP is infected by a Trojan (Trojan.Win32.Agent.jh) I was going to get back to you when I saw that you had replied. Is this detection a false positive ?

My Avira Antivirus & Spybot Search & Destroy detected nothing. I had this scanned by Kaspersky-nothing. I submitted the file to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and 20 progs (including a-squared) detected no malware. Bu the a-squared installed on my PC will not allow me to proceed. So I think I will go ahead and install this. But I would definitely like to hear you opinion before doing that. Thank you.

Installed WFP in safe mode without problems. I cannot change the "start" because when I give save, it says "Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe Sorry to keep you up like this.

Do you mean a file named explorer_original.exe in C:\Windows.
(Just making sure before i touch anything in this folder)
