Many times you might want to change the product key of Office suite installed in your system. It might be because your product key expired and you got a new one or it might be because you installed Office using pirated key and now you want to change the product key with a genuine one.
To change the product key you'll have to uninstall the Office suite from your system and then reinstall it.
But here is a small and simple tutorial which will help you in changing the product key without uninstalling the Office.
Change Office XP Product Key:
1. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. Now goto:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Registration
2. Under "Registration" key, you'll see one or more GUID (Globally Unique IDentifiers) containing a combination of alphanumeric characters in following format:
{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}
3. Select each key and look at "ProductName" key in right-side pane. One GUID key will contain the version number of Office installed in your system "Microsoft Office XP Professional Edition".
4. Select that GUID key and delete following 2 registry entries from right-side pane:
DigitalProductID
ProductID
5. Close registry editor and run any Office application e.g. word, excel, etc. It should prompt you to enter a new product key.
6. Enter the desired product key and click on OK. That's it.

There are versions within each such as Student, XpOffice Pro etc, does it matter that the product key is for a different version?
VG
^^ Yes. Each version has different key.

THANK YOU! I have a genuine copy of Office 2003 installed but I couldn't get MS to stop telling me it was not genuine. This really helped!

I did everything you said for office 2003, and it didn't work. now i don't have Office 2003 on my system because it's asking for the product key I deleted. Any suggestions??
VG
^^ Thats what this tutorial is all about. After following this tutorial, Office applications will ask you to enter the Product key. Simply enter your key.

I thought this was to change your product key to whatever key you wanted so that you can reuse the setup CD on another computer (in case you didn't have the original product key).
Long story short, I HAD office 2003 on my laptop and I wanted to install it on my desktop. i have a copy that my friend made, so i had no product key to install it.
In any case, I've deleted DigitalProductID and ProductID on my laptop and now I don't have access to my Office programs without the key I never had. Anyway of recovering DigitalProductID and ProductID in my computer?
VG
^^ There is no way to recover them unless you created a backup of the keys. You can re-run the office setup and I think it'll restore the key.
tico
i tried rerunning the office setup and it immediately asks for the product key. sounds like Im SOL.
VG
^^ First uninstall Office from Control Panel. Then re-run the setup.
