Hacking System Properties Dialog Box in Windows XP

===========================

NOTE: If you are facing problems while saving the file after editing in resource hacker, then make sure you have disabled WFP (Windows File Protection) service using WFP Patcher, it can be found in our “Download” section.

Also if you are getting error “Can’t create file…“, that means you have edited and saved the file in past and there is a backup file which need to be deleted before saving this file again. Go to “System32” folder and you’ll see a file having “sysdm_original.cpl“. Delete it and try to save the file in resource hacker.

===========================

In this tutorial, I’ll describe how to change the first tab “General” in System Properties dialog box. Following is a screenshot of the dialog box which will you get after following this hack:

1.) I’m uploading some images, which will be required to be added in dialog box. Just download the ZIP file, extract it and you’ll get 4 BMP files:

Download BITMAPs

2.) Open %windir%\System32\sysdm.cpl file in Resource hacker.

3.) Now we have to replace existing 1.BMP file with the downloaded one. To do this:

a.) Goto Bitmap -> 1 -> 1033.
b.) Click on Action -> Replace Bitmap.
c.) Click on Open file with new bitmap… button.
d.) Select the new downloaded 1.BMP file and click on Open button.
e.) finally click on Replace button.

4.) Now we have to add remaining downloaded BMPs in the file. To do this:

a.) Click on Action -> Add a new Resource ….
b.) Click on Open file with a new resource… button.
c.) select 4.BMP and click on Open button.
d.) Give 4 in Resource Name and 1033 in Resource Language text boxes.
e.) Finally click on Add Resource button.

5.) Repeat 4th Step for other BMPs (5.BMP & 6.BMP) also. (Resource Name for 5.BMP & 6.BMP will be 5 & 6 respectively and Resource Language will be 1033 for both).

6.) Now download following text file, open it and copy the whole contents then goto Dialog -> 101 -> 1033 and replace existing code with the copied code:

sysdm_code.txt

7.) Click on Compile Script button.

8.) Now to change the text “Microsoft Windows XP” & “Version 2002” (or something like that):

a.) Goto: String Table -> 12 -> 1033.
b.) Change the String in 180 to “Windows VISTA™ Ultimate Edition” & click on Compile Script button.
c.) Similarly goto: String Table -> 13 -> 1033.
d.) And change the String in 195 to “Hacked by : VISHAL GUPTA” (If u want, U can change “VISHAL GUPTA” with your name ) & click on Compile Script button.

9.) At last Save the file and see the magic.

PS: Here in the screenshot image saying “ask for Genuine Microsoft software” is the OEMLOGO.BMP which you have to place at %windir\System32\ folder. I’m attaching it too.

OEMLogo

  1. This tutorial is good for a person who is reading it for a customzation purpose but the script that has to be induced in the resource hacker has to be a bit more descriptive for those wishing to modify or edit their dialogue boxes. Therefore plz try explaining the functions of various commands written in the scripts to make the tutorial a much more useful one. Thankyou.

  2. Hi

Actually all part in this script represent the various controls which you see in a dialog box, like textbox, Bitmaps, buttons, etc.

This script is created automatically and you don’t have to write in manually.

You can just move controls using mouse, delete them or can add new controls and Resource hacker will automatically change the script.

  3. Hi Vishal! your hacking tutorials are great.Just want to ask about “Resource Hacker” is it a program or something like a script?coz I was looking in the download area but I couldn’t find one…without knowing this I don’t know where to begin..thanks..

  4. Thanks earl.
Resource Hacker is a software which can be used to edit windows files.
You can download and read about it here:

    http://www.askvg.com/category/resource-hacker-tutorials/

  5. thanks..my bad..i didn’t know you made a brief tutorial about resource hacker..sorry about it but anyway thanks!you’re the best..

  6. You are welcome. I’m doing my best to put everything I know on this site. I just need support of others to make this site popular in this world.

  7. Sir. i did place the OEMLOGO.BMP at the said folder. Nothing appeared? Thanks.

  8. ^^ Thats strange. Did you put “OEMLogo.bmp” file in “%windir%\system32″ folder? i.e. if your windows is installed in C: drive, then you have to put the BMP file in “C:\Windows\System32″ folder.

  9. Your tutorial is great and all but I’ve tried it and everytime I replace Dialog -> 101 -> 1033 to the code you have listed it gives me this exact message
“Compiler Error in line 3 at offset 9
    Invalid statement: Text expected”

So if you can help me with this problem I will be thankful!

    Supporting you VG

  10. ^^ Thanks for pointing out the issue. I have put the code in a text file and have given the link in tutorial. So please try it again.

  11. Ok yes now it has worked but another problem occurs after I finish I press save and nothing happens  It stays as the XP info and everything. I also tried save as and type in the file name C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdm.cpl and then it says “Error Cannot be saved” What do I do please help me.

    -MP

  12. You’ll have to disable “WFP” (Windows File Protection) service. Download WFP Patcher from Downloads section and run it in Safe Mode.

  13. Hi Vishal how r you.
may you help me to change angelina Jolie’s pictures by an Avi Video.
how can i make it and what is the script for that.
thank you very much vishal .

  14. i need for your help.

  15. Hi vishal, thats really good.it would be so thank ful if i can know how to learn hacking….i mean the best way to get the system into our hands.Iam a greant lover of tweaking………..so pls help me up.i would be very thankful………am really impressed with your job………want to b a part of it

  16. VG, can you tell me (again) where i can found this in Windows VISTA?

  17. ^^ Not possible coz in Vista the file “sysdm.cpl” is only used for other tabs like Device Manager, etc. The main System Properties window is shown using many system files and registry. atm I have no idea but I’ll let you know if I come across something useful. :)

  18. hello!vishal………i am really excited,i followed evry step described above…but i cant see angelina pic in system properties box. while compiling script angelina’s pic appears in script.plz reply how can i solve it?

  19. ^^ You should disable WFP (Windows File Protection) service first. Download WFP Patcher from “Downloads” section, run it and then try to save the file. :)

  20. hey VG,my problem(i cant see angelina pic & OEMLOGO in system properties box. But while compiling script angelina’s pic & OEMLOGO appears in script) still happens,……..what can i do now?

  21. Try to open the file in Resource Hacker again and check whether it still contains the pic or not? If its there, then try following:

    1. Download “Replacer” from Downloads section.
    2. Open “%windir%\System32\DLLcache” folder (It’ll be hidden) and in this folder you’ll get another “sysdm.cpl” file.
    3. Replace this file with your hacked one too.

    It should help.

  22. hello VG,sorry, again i have to inform u that i cant find DLLcache in %windir%\System32 folder and using Replacer also the problem is still there.now…….?

  23. ^^ It’ll be a HIDDEN and system folder, so you’ll have to enable “Show Hidden files/folders” option and disable “Hide Protected System Files” option in “Folder Options”. Otherwise You can just type “%windir%\System32\DLLcache” in addressbar of Explorer and it’ll open the folder. ;)

  24. VG,i followed all the steps you recommended(’DLLcache’ opening & replacing the sysdm.cpl folder…) but my problem is still there.
    Now,what I have to do?

  25. Send me the file and I’ll check it. ;)

  26. to my gr8 surprise, after reinstalling XP and compiling with the help of reshacker ,im successful 2 modify my system properties box.thanks 2 u

  27. Good. :P

  28. I replaced shell32.dll,msgina.dll,xp1res.cpl (using replacer at WFP disabled position)a number of times 2 modify XP-look .but due 2 some unknown reason,i have 2 reboot my system successively three times recently.is these replacement harms my system’s stability?plz suggest something which prevents this thing.. :!:

  29. ^^ Nope. It has nothing to do with system stability. You can safely edit them. :)

  30. Hello. I really like what did u done  I still have a little problem. The OEMLogo.bmp does not appair. I put it in C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, but i can’t see it. What i have to do ?

  31. ^^ Thats strange. Did you copy the same code, I uploaded in the tut?
    Its working fine here.

  32. Maybe i have problems becouse i have Service Pack 2 and maybe there is not the same code for it

  33. Hello again. I added a new resource ( the genuine bmp ) with number 7, and then i modified this line ( CONTROL “”, 62, STATIC, SS_BITMAP | SS_CENTERIMAGE | WS_CHILD | WS_VISIBLE, 272, 152, 89, 54 ) with this line ( CONTROL 7, 0, STATIC, SS_BITMAP | SS_CENTERIMAGE | WS_CHILD | WS_VISIBLE, 272, 152, 89, 54 ) in Dialog ->101 -> 1033 and now IT WORKS! :) Have a nice day VG and keep going with your hacking system becouse it’s great!

  34. Hi Mr. VG Im a medical student from rajasthan n much impressed by ur tweaks. I have to reinstall winxp once or twice a month. So im making a ua disk. Can i add these hacking task to cd. Where should i find these files on xp disk and how i can do pls tell.

  35. ^^ The best way for you will be use Acronis True Image which can create an image of your whole system and you can restore it back if you face any problem in future. It takes only few minutes in creating image and restoring, which saves lots of hours which you waste in installing Windows and then software and then change lots of settings. ;)

You can read more about Acronis here:

    Link

  36. Means i cant make such changes in the win disk. Isnt it?

  37. hey i saw such changes in a customized win disc made by someone in gujrat. and i think it can be done. May be its tricky but i think it is possible. And thanks for suggesting acronis but actually i dont want it. I prefer to install a fresh system every time. So pls help me in this way. THANKS IN AD>

  38. ^^ You can make an unattended Setup CD with all your edited files. Me too have one. For it you’ll have to replace the files in your Setup with the edited ones. But before it you’ll have to compress the files.

I’ll post a tutorial on it very soon. So stay tuned.

  39. Thanks Im waiting. Pls post it soon. Thanks again.

  40. hi Mr.VG this is Asghar from Pakistan i really like ye hacking stuff wat i did is to change System Properties Dialog Box in Windows XP i follow all the instruction tha way u define in ye web page but facing lil ba problem before geeting started i rebooted mah pc in safe mode and run WFP patch in safe mode after tha all changes every thing is done and i see new property dialog box but after 1 min every thing is gone now when i rit click on my computer m geeting this error message : ( An error occurred while windows was working with the control panel file C:\WINDOWS\system32\SYSDM.CPL. )

i hope u reply me fo this error i’l be thank full to u :)

    Regards

    Asghar Durrani

  41. Hi Asghar

Seems like you did something wrong in the file and it got corrupted. No need to worry. Look into “System32″ folder and you’ll find a backup of this file “sysdm_original.cpl”.

Delete the “sysdm.cpl” file and then rename “sysdm_original.cpl” to “sysdm.cpl”. Now your System propertied should work.

After that you can again try to change the file and if you face the problem again, you can follow the above steps again to restore original file.

  42. Thanx VG abt last reply lovely i really like tha way u explain thank u …. VG br0v 1 thing more Before we doing all this wiv system property we use the patch file (WFP) for disable file Protection now tell how to enable file protection after all this process ???

Yep. Its possible. I’ll post a tutorial about it very soon. ;)

    Wating VG bhai ;)

  62. ^^ Here you go: ;)

    Link

  63. hi vg,

this is one long notepad to you. so be free for a while for me. since i stumbled upon your deviantArt, i’ve gotten addicted to it. now it’s worse than the vodka i drink occasionally. ha, ha, just jokin’.

i followed your tut on modding sysdm.cpl, explorer.exe and shell32.dll. the normal ways of adding a control, positioning it on the dialog and add other stuff goes well with me. but i’ve yet to learn a bit about finding and disabling a particular tab. say, the automatic updates or system restore tabs in the sysdm.cpl. but i doubt if any of the tabs that show up (’cept the general) are in the above file. i guess they’re coded somewhere else. and if they are, where are they? i’ve tried hard searching but to no avail.

as of now my pc gets used by many people (including my cousins when they often visit us from down south). what i’d like would be to make available for them the whole system but when it comes to altering or modifying the theme setup and doing system wide changes, i’d not like anyone to be able to do so. and this would include altering the theme too (i’ve set up my theme to vista black as per your tut and thanx for that).

although there are you-know-well-what third-party appz that serve my purpose quite well, i hate employing any such. i completely avoided the vtp release and followed your tuts on xp>vista trans. the only appz i’ve integrated into my system (again as per your tut) are the styler toolbar and the qtaddressbar.

vg, i want to know one thing. is there any workaround to access back the registry once you disable it from within itself (DisableRegistryTools). obviusly, you’re disabling regedit.exe from executing. and the only way to execute it would be to 0 back this keyword or delete it. xdn tweaker or xteq - please, no way!

the second thing’s if i modify explorer.exe and shell32.dll and do an mfs_gray to user-level access to taskbar / start menu / clock / toolbar changes, is that going to affect my system someday when the wfp finds out i’ve been messing

  64. hi vg,

sorry to bother again. i was just modding shell32.dll. i use reshack just as most of you guys. i dunno, but it has been almost three weeks since i last used it and in the meanwhile, other users @my home have installed at least a dozen or so av or gfx appz. the result is that they system32 folder has become bloated (almost nearing 1.5GB mark).

when i use reshack’s file>open it pops a tiny fileOpen box that is just not resizable. now when i access the system32 folder and navigate to a particular file, reshack just sits waiting for that file to show up (takes quite a long, about 10-15 sec on the average). i’m also using flash, dreamweaver, photoshop, all msoffice appz, some games with file>open facility, and they don’t show this delay when i access the syste32 folder thru them. is it reshack’s limit in its design or something else.

i also thought of a possibility. you tell me if i’m correct or not. can the file>open dialog in reshack be made resizable? if not, can it be made bigger, say, at least 640×480? i’ve tried hacking reshack, but i just don’t seem to understand the secret.

    thanx and regards,
    baLaJi

  65. Yep. Resource Hacker shows delay in opening file coz it searches for all dialog box, etc in the file. And the Open dialog box can’t be resized.

  66. Thanx Alot VG u r love man ;)

  67. hi vg,

please don’t say that man! it makes me  there must be some way to hack it. hey, i’ll tell you something. i diassembled the reshacker exe. and i got something very useful. there were a lot of imports from kernel32, gdi32, &c. but the one i was looking for seems here.

Imp Addr Hint Import Name from comdlg32.dll - Not Bound
    ——– —- ——————————————
    000AF87C 0 ChooseFontA
    000AF880 0 FindTextA
    000AF884 0 GetSaveFileNameA
    000AF888 0 GetOpenFileNameA

and then i tried hacking the comdlg32.dll. this stuff has dialogs @1547 and 1552 that’re very interesting. the one at 1547 is not resizable but 1552 is the modern file>open dialog with the ‘places bar’ feature on its left side. but then i found out that there’s no point in hacking the 1547 or even anything in this dll.

the easiest way would be to point the reshacker import locations (in this case, 000AF884 and 000AF888) to point to the location of the new file>open i.e. the location of dialog>1552. we don’t need to reshack the reshack exe. instead i would like to use a hex editor to just change these values to the new file>dialog location. and i’d be honest enough to admit that

    - i don’t know how to find the location of the new file>dialog in comdlg32.dll :???: i already tried disassembling it but it wouldn’t. to circumvent wfp, i made a copy of it and tried again. but i guess since it’s a protected dll, microsoft had made sure that no one gets its code.

maybe you can do it. and i’m requesting you to help me out on this. call this my never-ending-itch but i badly need to accomplish it. i’ve mailed to angusjohnson about my requirement but i doubt if he’ll find time enough to reply me personally. meanwhile, i’m trying out myself. i’ll post if, if at all, i succeed.

    cheers man!

  68. Sorry buddy but atm I have no time to look into this issue. but you can do one thing!

Open “comdlg32.dll” file in Resource Hacker and increase the dialog box size manually but you’ll also have to increase text box size and change its position too. ;)

  69. it’s quite alright considering that you’d have no time at all for this. maybe in the near future you could try this out. meanwhile, i’m trying this out at my end just as you said.
    thanx and cheers!

  70. Hello I have done what you have said to do and the vista globe is there but no other pictures are showing up. Can you help me out? I have put all the pictures in the system32 folder as you said. Please let me know ASP

  71. ^^ Please follow step 4. Only “OEMLogo.bmp” file needs to be placed in System32 folder. Other Bitmap files should be included in the sysdm.cpl file.

  72. Great trick! Fantastic. But my System Properties in Control panel became two. Can you tell me how to delete the original?

  73. hay bro this not working after replec plzz tell me wat can i do :???:

  74. about: thehitman - system properties…became two

hi there. i’m facing the same problem. i checked this out. but to my surprise i could find only one sysdm.cpl in c:\windows\system32, i.e. my own customized sysdm.cpl. the control panel shows this too in addition to the original one inspite of only one sysdm.cpl. i guess this is the way xp has a built-in feature of protecting its system. though i’m not sure about this. vg, you might be able to shed more light on this.

  75. hay bro plz make a video and uplod here this too long and i confeus

  76. ^^ Please spend a little time with Resource hacker and go thru “All about Resource hacker” tutorial and you’ll understand all the things.

Regarding 2 System Properties in Control panel, Make sure there is no “sysdm_original.cpl” file present in “System32″ folder. If its there, delete it.

  77. even after deleting the “sysdm_original.cpl” file, the control panel continues to show the windows xp original system in addition to the customized sysdm.cpl. vg, i’ve sent you a mail including the snaps of the control panel and checks in the folder c:\windows\system32 using cmd. hope this would be of some help in finding out what’s wrong or otherwise.

  78. Yep. Its happening because Windows is detecting that “sysdm.cpl” file has been modified and thats why its showing the edited one as well as the original one in Control Panel.

There is no problem if its happening. One thing can be done. Goto “%windir%\System32\DLLCache” folder and replace “sysdm.cpl” file with your edited one. It might solve it.

  79. Problem solved! The original system properties vanished at the control panel after deleting the “sysdm_original.cpl” at system 32. Thanks Vishal. You’re a PC genius! Keep up teh Good work and keep sharing.

  80. sir.im new here.i would like to ask about hacking the sys. properties, the oem logo does not appear, why?others is just nice.on the other hand,i also try to hack run box,but i do not understand your briefing, could you tell me where to replace 404.bmp n 405.bmp?i could not find it.tq

  81. hello sir.. U r doing great job sir .. While hacking system props in Xp ( using Resource hacker) , i’m getting error message like this ..
“The application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\SYSDM.CPL is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against ur installation diskette. ”

I checked the images under BITMAP->1->1033 to BITMAP->6->1033.. Everything is looks perfect.. I also used the coding given by u in DIALOG->101->1033.. The dialog box also looks perfect. I saved it( no probs in saving the file).

As u already insisted to others i tried to replace the SYSDM.CPL in the C:\windows\system32\DLLCache. but i can’t find the file there.. eventhough i copied that file to that location. Still there exists the problem..

Please help me to fix the problem

  82. VG, i tried every step but it just won’t work, it always shows the original box, plus i modified shutdown and other boxes u told for having look a like vista but no one works, i hav XP Professional Sp2

    Help me plz

  83. ^^ Please run WFP Patcher in Safe mode. You can get it in our Download section.

  84. Thanks.

i have one more query that i tried to replace my bootskin with a custom one but when i reboot it shows the custom bootskin then gives a blue screen of death and then reboots again and it keeps going on and on till i run my pc in safe mode and uninstall bootskin software.

    Help me out

  85. ^adnan
    hi,
let me take this opportunity to answer. the problem is not due to sd bootskin. this is due to a wrongly patched explorer.exe/shell32.dll. it’d be better if you installed your os afresh or atleast ‘recover’d it. that way you’d make sure you get a fresh explorer shell. now run bootskin first before patching any of your os files. i’m sure it should work this way! i got the same problem when i first started my patching exercises about 5-6 years ago on win98/2k. adnan, let me know the result.

  86. i patched the uxtheme.dll first then i switched off WFP.

so how do i recover my system? i dont hav time to format and reinstall windows.

  87. ^^ Bootskin has issues with some PC. I’ll advise you to use Tuneup Utilities to apply boot screens.

  88. yep. vg you’re right. i did find atleast two xp versions (compaq - very old) and an educational (cut-down) vlk version that get into trouble when you use sd bootskin. both are installed at my colleag’s. and guess what? i did try out tuneup utils on both of these. the systems then seem to be working fine, atleast for 24h.

the problem seems to be microsoft’s so-called “memory leaks”.
i dunno what seems to be leaking, probably their buggy software, it’d seem  .

so adnan, you’d still have to do a “recover”y of your system using an xp boot cd (that’d avoid formatting & reinstalling &c, the pain). then the rest follows as per vg’s advise.

    all the best!

  89. Hi vishwal,

I am trying do the same, but it not working.
The modified script and icon are changed to default.

  90. Hi vishwal,

  91. ^^ Please run WFP Patcher in Safe mode. You can get it from our “Downloads” section.

  92. hi all,

there’s been a cascade of posts saying about sysdm.cpl modding not working . and i just wanted to mention that you don’t need safe mode to run wfp. it’s working in normal mode for me. to just refer about vg’s modding, i wanted to say that i must have done my sysdm.cpl and used wfp about a few tens of times. and guess what, the result shows up perfectly! since this forum doesn’t allow posting of pics, i couldn’t show my result. what one probably needs to do is to check up the control codes for dialogs with vg’s codes. those line breaks, commas, values, quotes &c all need to be in that proper order . then one needs to save the modded file as a file with the same name but in some other safe directory. and only then use wfp (it’s called replacer.cmd and the messages are self-explanatory). if care is taken at every step, i’m sure everything would turn up fine for all.
    all the best,
    thanx vg for your insights,

  93. ^^ Exactly. You are right. I have mentioned all steps and you just need to follow them step by step. :)

  94. hi again! vg, about a few hours before, one of my friends tried your modding on shell32.dll. he used reshacker and replacer. he told me that he copied the codes for the start>run as per yours (with the mickey mouse pic  ) and pasted it in the appropriate dialog#. then he compiled the script, exited reshacker and did a ‘replace’. what he got was the same old start>run even after rebooting!

i told him, and i’m again telling all here, that you need to save the modded file with the same name but in a different directory. my friend didn’t, so he got the same. after i taught him the steps, the method worked fine for him. he gives his thanx to you vg.

if anyone is saving the modded file in the same folder as the original say c:\windows\system32 with a different name, then the replacer may work but the system needs to find the exact file (”explorer.exe”, “shell32.dll”, “msgina.dll”, &c). so the need is to save the handiwork to a different directory with the same filename. this way, when replacer is worked, the system would find the required file at its original place with the original name.

sorry for being so detailed and boring. but vg, i guess i needed to explain the method in simple terms.

    cheers!

  95. ^^ That was really a nice explanation. Thanks. :)

  103. ^^ Goto “System32″ folder and you’ll see a file “sysdm_original.cpl” there. Delete the main “sysdm.cpl” file and rename “sysdm_original.cpl” to “sysdm.cpl”. Now it should work.

  113. ^^ Please read “All About Resource Hacker” tutorial in “Resource Hacker” section. It’ll teach you how you can add your own customized resources in a file.

  116. Thanks Vishal
    It Works.
Can It Be In Compact Mode Like in Windows XP

  117. ^^ Yep. You can change window size using the mouse and then click on “Compile Script” button. You’ll also have to change other controls size, position. Just play around all the controls and you can make your own changes.

  121. dear VG.. ive successfully hack the system properties.. thanks to you.. but there is another problem.. when right clicking MY COMPUTER then properties.. the dialog box doesn’t appear anymore.. what could be the problem.. thanks in advance.. and thank you for replying my post..

  122. ^^ Seems you made some mistakes while editing the file, thats why its no longer appearing. Open “System32″ folder and there you’ll get a backup of this file “sysdm_original.cpl”. Delete the edited sysdm.cpl file and rename this backup file to “sysdm.cpl”. Next time edit the file carefully. A small mistake can make your system corrupt. ;)

  123. thanks vg.. ive finally hack my system properties..

  136. How can the edited dialog box be saved in windows xp iso image .

  137. ^^ Pls follow this link:

How to Include Your Edited System Files in Windows Setup?

  138. The above given steps worked for me. But when I placed the oemlogo.bmp file in windows /system32 folder the windows genuine image did not appear in  the general tab please help

  139. How can i restore my original general tab .

  140. ^^ Here are your answers:

    1. Try to create a text file with name "Oeminfo.ini" in "System32" folder. It should work.

    2. To restore the original tab, you'll need to restore the original "sysdm.cpl" file. Look in "System32" folder. There will be a backup file "sysdm_original.cpl". Delete the new "sysdm.cpl" file and rename the backup file to "sysdm.cpl"
