As you know Windows 7 contains a new redesigned Calculator which has new GUI and new options. You can get more information about it in following topic:

If you can't use Windows 7 but like the new Calculator, then you can get the same calculator working in Windows Vista.

"Anoop" @ Daily Gyan has posted about a ported version of Windows 7 calculator which works in Windows Vista without any problem, so you can enjoy the fully functional Windows 7 calculator in your Vista.

Download the ZIP file from following link:

Now extract the ZIP file and run the "calc.exe" file.

If you want to replace the default calculator with this new one, then replace following existing files with the new ones:

%windir%\System32\calc.exe
%windir%\System32\en-US\calc.exe.mui

That's it. Now you can enjoy the new Windows 7 calculator in Vista.

PS: You'll need to take ownership of both files before replacing them. Visit following tutorial:

I'm an extreme noob.. heh... *blush* keep that in mind when offering any suggestions.. hee..

  • update: I was able to delete the broken file using "Tune Up"... so now I'm back at square one. Any suggestions on how to take ownership of the calc in vista 64? I have installed the take ownership .REG zip file and have used it before with success, however it isn't working for me with calc.

    *smiles* thank you

  • To take ownership you can edit the security manual.

Go to properties for the calc.exe and select the security tab. Click on "Advanced" below. Click the "Owner" tab and then click "Edit." Change the "Owner" to yourself.

I also had add myself with full control. Go back to the "Security" tab under "Properties" and click "Edit" up top. Click "Add" and type in your user name and click "Check Name." Now give yourself "Modify" or "Full Control" rights. Exit properties and you should be good to go.

    Do this for both files.

  • If after replacing both files, you can't open calc.exe, it's probably because you did not replace the whole en-US folder in Systerm 32, copy and paste the en-US folder and you're good to go.

  • I followed the steps for Vista 64 bit and it works perfectly, remember to replace both the System32 and SysWOW64 files.

  • Taking control of ".exe" files takes a bit more work, but can be done without going into the command prompt, and may take a few tries to master. Right-Click the file and click "Properties."
Under the Security Tab, click "Advanced" towards the bottom of the window. Now you are in the "Advanced Security Settings for calc.exe" window. Edit the permissions and the owner as necessary here to include the current user account, noting that administrator permissions are required to do this. After overwriting the file, you may return to this menu and remove your control to avoid accidentally messing up the file in the future, or leave it as-is to your discretion.
