[Fix] Can’t Change Volume Level on HD Channels in Tata Sky DTH

Tata Sky is one of the most famous and reputable DTH companies in India. It provides excellent hardware (set top box) and user interface to its users as mentioned in following exclusive review articles:

It provides 24 HD channels which puts it at 3rd position in HD channels comparison chart as mentioned here.

But there is a small issue in Tata Sky set top box (STB) which has been faced by many Tata Sky users. This issue occurs in HD set top boxes. I have also faced this issue in past and after getting a few emails about same issue, today I decided to create this topic.

If you are using Tata Sky HD (without recording feature) or HD+ (with recorder) set top box with an HD compatible TV such as LCD, LED, etc, you might have noticed that when you are watching an HD channel, the volume level automatically turns to maximum and it doesn't change even if you try to change it using Tata Sky remote.

If you try to increase or decrease volume level of an HD channel using TS remote, the volume level indicator on screen changes accordingly but the sound output doesn't change and you keep getting maximum sound on HD channels.

The volume level works fine on SD channels but doesn't work on HD channels.

I think this problem occurs when your TV doesn't support Dolby Digital sound output. Tata Sky provides Dolby Digital sound on HD channels and when your TV set doesn't support it, this issue occurs. If you have more than one HD enabled TVs in your house and if you are facing this problem, try to attach the STB with other TV. There are big chances that the issue will not occur in the other TV set.

Now the question occurs what should you do when you face this problem? How to fix this annoying issue? Don't worry! There is a working solution for this problem.

If you are facing volume related issue in Tata Sky HD STB, just follow these simple steps and you'll be able to change volume level on HD channels without any problem:

1. Press Organizer button on Tata Sky remote and then select "User Settings" option.

2. Now scroll down a little and select "Sound Settings" option.

3. It'll open sound settings screen where you can change default volume level of STB as well as audio type for SPDIF and HDMI output.

If the Preferred audio type is set to Dolby Digital, change it to PCM for both or at least HDMI as shown in following image:

4. Press Blue button to save the changes and now you'll be able to change volume level on HD channels.

  • TV doesn't support DD..?? Not agreed, sound is coming and it can be controlled by TV. The trick above changing output to pcm work means TS is not controlling bit stream, DD. TS is bypassing DD via HDMI and Optical for TV or HT. So it is not a good idea to misguide any one who has brought big LED by spending his fortune.
Mine Sony 42", can well support DD and DTS ( via usb) may be it is down mixing to 2.0 DD.

^^ You got a point. The reason might be different but the solution works for all TV sets having this problem.

  • I have the same problem. Thank you for the solution. Yes I am aware that the quality of PCM audio is lower than Dolby.

But the question remains - why this problem occuring. Is it Tatasky's fault? Some mis-configurations?

  • Thank you. This helped very much!

  • Thanks very much, it solved my problem with HD channels not changing sound output on my Tata Sky HD channels. Cheers !!

  • I have connected my ONKYO 3700 to TS STB by optical fibre, will this change the Dolby Digital output by making the above changes.

  • Hi guys,

I am facing the same issue plus a more annoying one. I have a 40" Sony HD TV which I bought a few years ago. Now I got the HD box and it wont work with the TV through HDMI connection. Screen comes on for a few seconds at times on hard reset and goes black only with sound otherwise no image and only audio. Countless escalations their people came and connected through AV aux cables which results in slow remote performance and begs me the question why I paid for HD. Tata Sky has not been able to solve the problem and did not even get back to me after that. Funny thins is the same TV HDMI works just fine on my PS3 and laptop. Any ideas anyone ???

^^ Did you try to change HD resolution settings in STB settings? Try to set it to a lower option.

  • Hi VG,

Yes tried all the resolution settings one by one by connecting to an alternate 20 inch TV I have and then connecting to the 40 inch. Tata Sky people blame the TV. Sony people come in and find no problem with TV, also justifying that compatibility or version issue with the TV would not result in the PS3 and my laptops working through the TV HDMI. Im thinking i should have gotten the standard STB box and connection. So people try and get a demo to see if it works before you purchase.

^^ You should also try reset to factory settings option in your TV. Check your TV settings and you'll get an option to restore it to default or factory settings. Remember it'll reset all your customized settings in TV.

You can also try a different HDMI cable to connect STB with your TV.

  • Hi VG,

Tried to no avail on the different HDMI cable versions.

I'll give the factory settings a go and update !

  • Hi VG.

Did the reset yesterday evening, no luck!

  • VG

^^ Thats really strange. Did you try the HD settings options given in Tata Sky STB Settings?

  • Thanks I could solve the problem.......

  • Dear sir,

I am residing in Chennai - India. I have connected my Sony Bravia (KDL-52XBR6 LCD TV) which was purchased in USA by my friend to a TataSky HD set top box. The pictures are clear and good but my TV screen keeps blinking every 2 or 3 minutes. Can it be corrected. The TV technician has certified that the TV is perfect.

^^ Try to change the resolution from "Organize -> User settings -> HD settings".

  • Dear
Dolby mode STB pass all audio feed to connected Dolby requirement then those equipment only de code audio feeds . that point of time STB remote not work . its very plus point of Tatasky.
analog mode PCM if we select that auto will control via STB only . but if we really want to enjoy Dolby then select Dolby mode at STB setting and use Dolby capable auto/video equipment .

  • This solved my problem. Thank you a ton.

  • can i use tatasyk set upbox for cabel tvsetup box?
