Recently we shared Windows 7 Login screen and Shellstyle for Windows XP:

Now its turn of "Boot Screen". Windows 7 contains a new boot screen which shows "Starting Windows..." text along with a glassy progressbar in the middle.

I have tried to create a similar boot screen "VistaVG Boot Screen" for Windows XP.

It looks similar to Windows 7 boot screen. You can download it from following link:

Extract the ZIP file and you'll get following 2 files:

  • NToskrnl.exe
  • VistaVG Seven Boot Screen.tbs

You can use any of the 2 files to enjoy the new boot screen.

If you want to use "NToskrnl.exe" file, then you'll need to replace existing "NToskrnl.exe" file present in "%windir%\System32" folder with this new one. You can use "Replacer" to replace the files which you can find in our "Downloads" section.

Or if you want to use the second file "VistaVG Seven Boot Screen.tbs", then you'll need Tuneup Utilities to apply it which is very safe.

UPDATE: Windows Vista users can also enjoy the new Windows 7 boot screen. Visit this link.

  • Hey, I may have a solution foy those who are having troubles with XP SP3 shoving the original boot screen.

    - Dowload the "ntoskrnl.exe" file made by Vishal
    - Rename with a another name, like, for instance, "ntosboot.exe"
    - Put it in the "system32" folder
    - Open you boot.ini file and at the end of the last line you just add "/kernel=ntosboot.exe
    - Save the file, restart and you're done.

On my boot.ini file the last line looks like this:
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professionnel" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /kernel=ntosboot.exe

I'm runnning XP Pro SP3 with the latests updates and it works fine. Thanks for your work VG.

  • Could you please share the .res file containing the necessary images? I have a dualcore pc and replacing NTOSKRNL.EXE with yours doesn't have any effect. Depending on the type of CPU, Windows uses different files for booting. I discovered my pc (with 5600+ X2 and WindowsXP SP3) uses NTKRNLPA.EXE!
Renaming ntoskrnl.exe = boot failure. So I need to edit NTKRNLPA.EXE. I tried extracting the images with Reshacker and then editing NTKRNLPA with those images. It worked but the bootscreen looks ugly, yellow/green/blue instead of white.

btw People with 2 cpu's will have to edit NTKRNLMP.exe but most people dont have this.

So if you could share a .res file or just seperate bitmaps, would be great.

  • Buddy the boot screen is Awesome!!!

    But dude i a hv a problem:-
I am able to run the boot screen "VistaVG Seven Boot Screen.tbs" using the tune up utilities.
However i am unable to run the new boot screen by replacing NToskrnl.exe What may the reason behind it.

  • Nice! I like Windows Se7en! (on XP) :D

  • Vishal,

Your work is amazing and you are very talented.

Could you please make an updated boot screen ntoskrnl.exe for XP that uses the newer boot screen image from Windows 7 Beta 1?

I understand that it cannot be animated in XP, but it would still be incredible.

    Keep up the great work.

    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Hi VG, How did you create this bootskin ?

  • Hi once again Vishal Gupta!

May I request for another download link (rather than deviantart.com) because my browsers (both IE and FF) are experiencing difficulties in viewing deviantart.com

    Cheers,
    Einstein Goodyear

  • NOT WORKING!!

Vishal Gupta, you only provide NTOSKRNL.EXE but this file is useless on multicore CPU systems (Intel Core Duo/Quad or AMD X2/X3/X4) since they use ntkrnlpa or ntkrnlmp instead!

Could you provide the resource files or bitmaps if you don't have time to hack these files? Then we can do it ourselves.

^^ Either use Tuneup Utilities to apply the theme or use "Vince" method which works perfectly.
