If you are using genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 OS in your computer, you’ll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. The free upgrade will be done with the help of a small app “Get Windows 10” which sits in Taskbar notification area. It’ll automatically download Windows 10 setup files on your computer and will notify you once the download completes. After that you can install Windows 10 in your computer.

Things You Should Know and Do Before Upgrading to Windows 10

But there are many users who don’t have “Get Windows 10” app in their computers. To fix the issue, we have posted a troubleshooting guide at following link:

But if you still can’t see the app and its icon, then you’ll be unable to take advantage of free Windows 10 upgrade offer. Fortunately, Microsoft has released a Media Creation Tool to download Windows 10 setup ISO files as well as to create installation media such as bootable USB drive or DVD.

This tool will help you in downloading the correct Windows 10 edition and type such as 32-bit or 64-bit.

You can download the official tool from following link:

After downloading the setup files of Windows 10 using this tool, you can upgrade your existing OS to Windows 10 or you can create bootable USB drive or DVD to install Windows 10 later. You can also save the setup files in full standalone offline ISO file format if you wish.

Once you create installation media or save ISO file, you can use them to install Windows 10 in other computers as well.

NOTE: If you upgrade your existing Windows 7/8.1 to Windows 10 using this tool, then you can use the bootable USB drive or DVD or ISO created by this tool to perform clean installation of Windows 10. But if you don’t upgrade existing OS to Windows 10 and try to direct install Windows 10 using bootable USB drive or DVD, it’ll ask for Windows 10 product key which you’ll not have obviously.

So first upgrade your existing Windows 7/8.1 to Windows 10 so that it can be successfully activated by Microsoft servers. After that you can perform a clean installation. If you do this, product key will still be asked at installation time but you can skip the key and Windows will be automatically activated by Microsoft after installation.

  1. I have windows 8.1 installed and my windows 10 upgrade is reserved. I had used media creation tool to upgrade my pc, but due to slow internet connection I was unable to perform the download. I am having an iso image file of windows 10.
can I use the iso file to upgrade to windows 10? or whether my windows 10 will get activated or not after installation?

  2. ^^ Yes. You can. Just extract the ISO file using 7-Zip or any other utility and run Setup.exe file. When the setup runs, select upgrade option.

  3. Method 1, CLean install windows 10 without Upgrading first.

It is my understanding while running Windows 10 Setup in Windows 7/8/8.1, you can do a Clean install with the windows 10 ISO or from the ISO loaded on the USB, and instead of picking upgrade when running setup from inside your existing operating system, you can pick, DO NOTHING, and it will perform an Clean Install and be activated. Also, you should make sure you have your personal FILES backed up.

Method 2, Clean Install windows 10 without upgrading first.

Mount the ISO and copy gatherosstate.exe from the sources folder to desktop and run it to create a GenuineTicket.xml file on desktop and save GenuineTicket.xml to your flash drive.

Now you can clean boot from USB/DVD and install Windows 10 Clean on your HDD, but make sure you back up your personal files first. I usually just move my files to a folder in the root directory and then boot from the DVD or USB to clean install.

When it asks for a key, SKIP that part, and do not enter a key in. After the install is complete, copy the GenuineTicket.xml file from your USB drive to your computer’s folder GenuineTicket located in this path C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket

Reboot your computer and it should be genuine.

  4. My Dell 1545 laptop was updated from retail win7 home premium. I was just getting along fine with it until suddenly yesterday MS desided to run the update on win 10; now I cannot logon, so my laptop is just a brick!. But safety was at hand, in win 7 I dual booted with Linux Ubuntu 15.04
My question is this; if I re-install win 10 via iso file from usb, will I loose all my other installed software & DATA. & will it affect my Ubuntu Grub prog that gives the win/Ubuntu option?

    Francis McCaffery.

  5. ^^ If you select upgrade option, it’ll repair the OS and will not remove installed software. But if you do a clean install, it’ll remove the programs.

Regarding Linux boot loader, ye, it’ll remove it as well. You’ll need to reinstall Grub loader using Linux setup disc.

  6. Hi VG,

Is there a way to clean install and activate without upgrading first? Some time back, I remember reading one of your post that it is possible, but not on the latest build.

  7. Vidyasagar Gupta or ANYONE: Exactly HOW do I upgrade my Windows 8 to 10? I could never install Windows 8.1 properly.

  8. Hello VG
I’ve got an issue. I have a PC with the Win 7 Pro OEM Key label stuck on the casing, along with the key of course. I decided to clean install using the TH2 iso created from the media creation tool. However, I’ve tried several times, but it’s refusing to recognise the OEM key as a valid one on the Win 10 Pro installation.
    Anything I might have missed?

  9. ^^ Since your key is OEM. I’ll advise you to first upgrade existing Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 so that it gets activated successfully. After that you can perform clean install again. Of course it’ll take extra time but that should work.

  10. Hi!
i bought used computer with unactivated windows7 and i dont know the product keys of that window. Can i upgrade without buying new windows7 pakage?

  11. I downloaded windows 10. It worked but it was more of a canival than a computer.I then clicked on go back to 7. Now I can no longer get on line. My computer cannot find the dial up modem . This is being sent by an old computer.

  12. Hi, I’ve been dealing with some random error at clean install.
In some pc’s it runs smoothly, but in others some NTLDR is missing press Ctrl+Alt+Del
    an cannot go further.

I’ve tried to change bootmgr name to NTLDR as some youtube videos says, but it doesn’t help.
Anyone has been passed for the same?

    Greetings

  13. Hey VG !!

    i used this tool to download Windows 10 32-bit & 64-Bit and when i was selecting architecture, i found there was 3 options : 1. 32-Bit, 2. 64-Bit, 3. Both. I selected both and guess what i got ??

i got an ISO image containing 32-bit+64-bit in a single ISO image. ??
the image is using .esd files rather than .wim files and when i select boot from USB, at first screen, i have to select the architecture i want to install in a Legacy Styled Boot Menu.

Both in 5.48GB ISO Image, Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool Compatible and 100% Legitmate.

  14. FYI, at the Microsoft Download Page, i selected “Download Tool Now” option just below the “Important” note message box.

  15. Hello VG
Any fix of being able to use the Media Creation Tool on a network bound by a proxy server? Currently the proxy server is denying access to the download of the Win 10 ISO file after having chosen the language and version to download…

  16. Hello.

Are I understand right that if I buy new laptop without Windows pre-installed, I cant install W10 at all? So if my laptop game from shop with Linux, first I need install W7 and then can get W10?

  17. ^^ You can purchase Windows 10 from Microsoft store. If you have genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1, you can install it and then upgrade it to Windows 10 for free.

  18. My Windows 7 OS is registered for free upgrade to Windows 10. I did upgrading my Laptop months ago but I didn’t satisfy as my NVIDIA Graphic card was not recognized. So I wish to Dual Boot Win 10 OS with Win 7 OS hoping such errors with Win 10 might get solved in the future. So I’m going for partition of my C Drive & install Win 10 in the new partition so I can Dual Boot. Would that activate my Win 10 OS installed in the new partitioned drive? If not by itself shall I use the product key of my Win 7 OS for activating Win 10. Would that work? Someone please reply.

  19. hey is it possible to create own window 10 usb copy from another window 10 system

  20. If my windows update on my win 7 is broken (I have tried to fix it, it apparently needs a clean install to fix) can I upgrade to 10? I have tried and get the exact same update error. Do I have to clean install my 7 and THEN upgrade? Error 0x80070057 is the problem and all the “fixes” have failed.

  21. i installed windows 10 on my pc but some of my programs don’t want to open and it opened when i had windows 7.When i want to install programs it gives me the error that says:File System error(-1073741819).How can i fix this? I do not have internet.

  22. ^^ It might be possible that the program is not compatible with Windows 10. You can try to run the setup in compatibility mode.

  23. Careful when using Windows 10.

While it works for some people, other people report that Windows 10 automatically deletes files without warning, including:

    1: Speccy
    2: CPU-Z
    3: HWMonitor
    4: CCleaner
5: Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver
    6: AMD Catalyst Control Center
    7: Certain PDF viewers
    8: Certain AntiVirus apps

Some people had no problems, while others noticed these files would suddenly vanish without warning.

    If you use Windows 10:

1: Backup everything you use, to at least 2x external devices.
2: Ensure you never allow Windows 10 to access 1 of the devices.
