A Bootable USB: Utility to Create Bootable USB Drive to Install Windows Vista, Server 2008 and 7

Imagine a situation where you need to install Windows Vista or 7 in a system but you don't have access to DVD drive. We all know Windows Vista, Server 2008 or 7 comes in DVDs and you'll need a DVD drive to install them. Then how will you install them? The solution is, you can create a bootable USB drive which can be used to install Windows without using DVD drive.

We have posted a detailed tutorial to create such bootable USB drive long time back, you can read about it here.

The above method is very easy to follow but wouldn't it be great if we can use a utility to do the whole task automatically? Our reader "Aris" has created a small utility exclusively for AskVG readers which creates a bootable USB drive to install Windows Vista, Server 2008 or 7.

Prerequisites:

  • A USB Drive (4 GB or more)
  • Windows Vista, Server 2008 or 7 ISO image or DVD
  • Host OS: Windows Vista (SP1 or SP2), Server 2008 or 7

How to Use:

Once you meet the requirements, run the utility. Its a portable utility so doesn't need installation. Simply run it and check the option "I have read and accepted the following License Agreement". Now click on OK button and it'll launch the main application.

It also shows a Help window so that you can use the utility easily. The utility requires only 4 easy steps to follow:

  • Check USB drive (To check whether your USB drive is attached or not)
  • Format USB drive
  • Choose DVD or ISO image (To copy the required files to USB drive)
  • Start the process to create bootable USB drive

PS: It also works in 64-bit Windows versions.

Thanks again to "Aris" for creating this utility for AskVG readers...

  • It will be a boon for netbook users!

  • Hello to all.

I am the writer of this app.

All you need is a Windows Vista SP1 or greater OS to be able to create bootable USB of Windows Vista and later.

There is an XP and Vista ( with no SP installed) "Preview" mode, so that means that the app is not functioning but you can see it only. The XP mode will be removed later. On Vista you get a message to install SP1.

That's all, I hope you enjoy it.

  • How many GB on USB do you need?

  • Same here like Mr.X and A.Muqeet (I have XP SP3 MCE)

  • @ Someone : A USB Drive (4 GB or more)
@ Riza, Mr.X & A.Muqeet : Host OS: Windows XP (SP2 or SP3), Vista (SP1 or SP2), Server 2008 or 7 - There is an XP and Vista ( with no SP installed) "Preview" mode, so that means that the app is not functioning but you can see it only. On Vista you get a message to install SP1.

    Read up sometimes.

    Thanks.

  • it say unable to open

  • Daf, you said:

    > @ Riza, Mr.X & A.Muqeet : Host OS: Windows XP (SP2 or SP3), Vista (SP1 or SP2),
    > Server 2008 or 7 - There is an XP and Vista ( with no SP installed) "Preview" mode,
    > so that means that the app is not functioning but you can see it only. On Vista you
    > get a message to install SP1.

However, at the top of this article it says:

Host OS: Windows Vista (SP1 or SP2), Server 2008 or 7

So either it was changed or you mis-quoted. Any ideas why your quote doesn't match?

P.S. And I, too, would like to know if it would work with XP, and possibly why it wasn't listed in the Host OS. Of course, if I take it literally, it probably means you've got to create it from a Vista, Server 2008, or Win 7 machine, but it doesn't say if you can create Win XP boot USB's from it. That's the important question.

  • To fdwojo and all the readers:

    Requirements are:
    Host OS: Windows Vista SP1 and later ( Vista SP2, Server 2008 SP1 or SP2, Windows 7 x86 or x64)
    USB drive: >=4 GB
Free space on drive: the same space as the size of the image (for the image extraction, if dvd mode then no free space required)

and you get a bootable USB for Vista and later ( Vista no SP, Vista SP1, Vista SP2, Server 2008, and Windows 7)

You will never will be able to create a bootable XP, nor will you be able to create a bootable from XP.
On Vista with no SP there is an error diskpart which is solved later by microsft on SP1 and later.

P.S. On next version the XP <> mode will be removed and will be listed on unsupported OSes.

    Have fun.

  • i tried install windows 7 using usb key...

    i'm getting the this error

    File: \boot\bcd
    Status: 0xc000000e
info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data

    plzzz help me

PS: i don't have dvd drive...sorry for my bad english

  • To SaVvY:

Probably an x86 host for an x64 ISO (or the opposite)

An x86 host OS for creating x86 bootable ( of course with an x86 ISO, and the same for x64 )
