7-Zip Theme Manager: Free Portable Tool to Customize 7-Zip Toolbar Theme and Filetype Icons

We here at AskVG love free file archive utility “7-Zip” and we always recommend it whenever required. In fact we have added it in our Downloads section so that more and more people can enjoy this awesome piece of software for Windows. 7-Zip works perfectly in almost all Windows versions from Windows 98 to Windows 8.

One thing which we don’t like about 7-Zip is its interface. Although the interface is minimal and clean which we always like but the toolbar icons and its filetype icons are not that good. It reminds us of old Windows NT days. And there is no built-in theme support in 7-Zip so you can’t install or apply new themes.

Although you can always use our favorite tool Resource Hacker to modify 7-Zip’s dll files to replace existing icons with your favorite ones but it’ll require lots of time and expertise and of course a set of good looking icons.

Don’t worry! If you also hate default icons of 7-Zip and want to change them without modifying any file, here is a good news for you.

Today we are going to share a free and portable tool which allows you to change default 7-Zip icons quickly and easily without modifying any DLL or EXE file.

7-Zip Theme Manager” is a free software which provides many ready-made toolbar themes and filetype icons set for 7-Zip utility. You just need to run the program, select the desired theme and apply it. It takes a few seconds and automatically patches the files for you.

Since its a portable tool, you don’t need to install it. You can run it without any installation. When you run it first time, it automatically checks for 7-Zip directory in your system. If it doesn’t find it, it asks you to select the directory. It might happen in case you are using a portable version of 7-Zip.

When you select a theme, the program shows a preview in right-side so that you can have an idea of the output without applying the theme.

There are 2 types of themes available: Toolbar theme and Filetype theme. “Toolbar theme” changes the toolbar icons present in 7-Zip program window. “Filetype theme” changes the filetype icons which are shown in Windows Explorer like icons of Zip, Rar, Gzip, Iso, etc files.

There are more than 90 toolbar themes and 20 filetype themes available in this program. It also allows you to change SFX (self-extracting archive) icon.

The program also allows you to check for newer versions of themes if available. Our favorite theme is “Tango 1” for toolbar as well as filetype.

If you want to restore default toolbar theme and filetype icons in future, you can easily restore them back using this program.

The program is available in 3 languages: English, German and Italian. It works for both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

  1. Oh, yeah, I’ve discovered this months ago, and it’s definitely a MUST HAVE if you use 7ZIP on Windows 7. For XP it’s not that horrible, as XP itself looks horrible by default. But on Windows 7 it definitely looks really really bad.
This little awesome app sure comes in handy to fix all that, fast and easy 😀

  2. is this made by 7-zip itself? I mean no 3rd party.
because I would like it build into their ‘file manager’.
    nice software anyway

  3. ^^ Here you go:

    7-Zip 9.23 Alpha (32-bit):

    dl.7-zip.org/7z923.exe
    dl.7-zip.org/7z923.msi

    7-Zip 9.23 Alpha (64-bit):

    dl.7-zip.org/7z923-x64.msi

    @sasja
No. Its a 3rd party software.

  4. Is about time somebody did something about the bland old look of 7Zip,is the only thing I never liked about it.Obviously the programmer is a ‘logic’ minded person and not into the arty stuff at all.Is why it’s such a good program.Looks nice aswell now,Thanx alot.

  5. Just tried this on Windows 8 64bit, it’s working fine…no bugs so far. Thanks!!!

  6. How to install themes for 7ZIP? I have downloaded 7ZTM but it is saying:
    1.No Toolbar themes found.
    2.No Filetype themes found

    I am using 7-Zip 9.23 alpha version with 7ZTM For 7-Zip 9.23 alpha.
    Thanks in advance.

I’m guessing you downloaded the hotfix only (2.1.1). You can use this, but you need to download 2.1 because that comes with the two extra folders required by the program. Then you can replace the .exe you get in 2.1 with the 2.1.1 hotfix.

Also whilst I’m here, anyone know how to get the toolbar divider like in the preview picture?
I found the large icon setting in the “View” sub-menu, but I would really like the divider between ‘Test’ and ‘Copy’

    Cheers
